People of all ages from across the area traveled to Altenburg this Friday and Saturday for the East Perry Community Fair. Events began Friday morning with a poultry- and rabbit-judging contest. Former restaurant owners face charges

A Daisy couple who have operated restaurants in three area locations in the past two years were arrested last week for failing to show up for court on felony bad check charges. Associate Circuit Judge Scott E. Thomsen issued arrest warrants for Bobby Steers, 45, and Krissty Steers, 27, when they failed to appear for preliminary hearings Tuesday. They were arrested by the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department.

The Cape Girardeau School District successfully appealed sanctions given to Franklin Elementary under the Missouri Assessment Program. After preliminary test results were released in August, Franklin was required to offer school choice because its students did not meet proficiency standards in communication arts for two years in a row. Southeast Missourian Nominating petitions for seats on the Cape Girardeau City Council will be available at city hall starting Monday, city clerk Gayle Conrad announced. Three of the seven council members -- Mayor Jay Knudtson, Ward 2 Councilman Charlie Herbst and Ward 6 Councilwoman Marcia Ritter -- will not be eligible to run for re-election because of term limits.
