Cape Girardeau Public School District kicked off American Education Week with the signing of a proclamation by Mayor Harry Rediger at the district administrative office at 301 N. Clark. Attending the signing were, from the left, Julie Castle, 6th grade, Central Middle School, daughter of Christina Castle; Cape School Board President Stacy Kinder; Kierra Wyatt, 4th grade, Clippard Elementary School, daughter of Kimberly Jackson and Shawn Wyatt; Mayor Rediger; Kelsey Martin, Senior at Central High School, daughter of Christine and Kevin Martin; and Superintendent of Schools Dr. Jim Welker. American Education Week focuses on the nation's commitment to students and educators. The first observance of American Education Week occurred December 4-10, 1921, with the National Education Association and American Legion as cosponsors.
