It is good to have friends. That holds true for both people and institutions. Southeast Missouri State University recently honored Judy Wilferth of Cape Girardeau as its "Friend of the University." It represents the highest honor the university's foundation bestows.
Southeast made a good choice in choosing Wilferth as its 1994 recipient. She led the university's foundation from 1990 to 1992. It was during that time that the foundation set out on its most ambitious fund-raising effort to date: a $25 million capital campaign. The goal was not only achieved but surpassed.
This enterprising Cape Girardeau businesswoman was a founding member of the foundation's board of directors. She served on the board from 1983 to 1989 and was reappointed in 1990.
Wilferth thinks promotion of the region's only four-year university is both a "privilege and a responsibility." A graduate of Southeast in 1963, she represents a real success story, owning and managing a number of retail businesses.
In addition to the university, she has been an active booster of the Cape Girardeau Chamber of Commerce, the Cape Girardeau Parks and Development Foundation and many other groups and projects.
She has provided genuine gusto and dedication to these various organizations and causes. That isn't always easy to find in a volunteer. Southeast Missouri State University and Cape Girardeau are lucky to have Judy Wilferth on their team.
