Watching out

Recent accidents in which pedestrians and bicycles were involved in collisions with cars are reminders that no one owns the road. We all must share it.

One of the pedestrians, a woman with a cane, suffered a broken ankle when struck by a car backing up in a parking lot. In that case, the driver was not cited.

Two other drivers are wanted for leaving the scene of an accident.

In the most recent incident, a 6-year-old child pushing his bicycle across the street at dusk Sunday received lacerations when struck by an automobile. The driver was not cited.

These collisions underline the inherent danger of vehicles weighing thousands of pounds sharing space with pedestrians and bicyclists. Cape Girardeau is exploring establishing bike lanes on four major streets. They would give bicyclists some space of their own.

But whether walking, bicycling or driving, we all have to watch out for each other.
