On April 13, the Southeast Missouri State University Athletics Department will hold its sixth annual Walk for Women, an event held to help raise money for athletic scholarships and spotlight women athletes.
Cindy Gannon, Southeast senior associate director of athletics, told the Southeast Missourian earlier this month that while the walk is a way to promote the women's teams, the scholarship money generated helps men and women athletes at the university.
Cindy Knudtson, a volunteer with the walk, told the paper that hearing feedback from student athletes reinforces why this event is important.
"I've heard testimonies from two or three athletes that said they would not be on this track if not for Southeast and these scholarships," Knudtson said. "When the football players or soccer players come down and tell you ‘thank you for your support,' you realize you're changing lives."
Gannon said 266 of the 318 student athletes at the university receive financial aid. The Walk for Women helps in part with scholarship funding.
Individuals or teams may register for the walk, which continues through the morning of the event. Advanced registration can be done online at www.gosoutheast.com. While donations are not required, those who make a suggested donation of $25 for adults or $10 for children will receive a Walk for Women T-shirt.
Check-in the day of the walk begins at 9 a.m. at Houck Field House. The walk begins at 10 a.m.
We hope you consider supporting Southeast athletics.
