America's veterans deserve our gratitude and support. That can come in many forms, but there are tangible ways we can show our thanks.
A recent story in the Southeast Missourian highlighted the need for volunteers to take veterans to medical appointments. The organization Disabled American Veterans helps provide this transportation. The group provides vehicles. The Department of Veterans Affairs pays for fuel. But the service needs more volunteer drivers to help meet the needs of area veterans. Additional volunteers also provide current volunteers more available time off from driving.
Hospital service coordinator Lacey McClintock told the Southeast Missourian that the group is flexible with volunteers on days available to drive. "We have routes stationed in Farmington, West Plains, Paragould (Arkansas) and Poplar Bluff, as well as Cape Girardeau," she said. "So we have five different routes right now that we utilize, and we go within a 100-mile radius of each of those places."
According to McClintock, more than 900 veterans were served in the area last year. They expect the need to increase.
If you are looking for a way to volunteer and thank a local veteran, this is something to consider. To volunteer, call (573) 778-4616 or email lacey.mcclintock@va.gov. Thank you to all who currently volunteer. We extend a special thank you to all our area veterans for your service to this country.
