Venue isn't suitable for youngsters

In response to the story "'Heartland Idol' contest gives local talent a chance to shine": I agree the "Heartland Idol" contest has merit and gives local people an opportunity to showcase their talent. I also agree with DJ Kirby Ray that this is a karaoke contest, but it is also a popularity contest because the preliminary contest is judged by votes only.

What my family and I witnessed Saturday at Show Me's was an unfortunate and dangerous event because of the location. I had a young family member singing in the under-18 category in which there were seven minors competing. Many of her friends and family members wanted to attend to show support and vote for her, including several young children.

When we arrived, the room was terribly overcrowded and smoke-filled. One child in our group was touched with a person's cigarette. Thankfully, it did not leave a burn. The person was apologetic and responded by saying, "I'm just not used to having children in this bar."

The police entered the building to count the occupancy, and an announcement was given as to the location of the fire exits. I believe the radio stations should review their decision to have the contestants who are under 18 years old perform at that location in the future.
