The Area Wide United Way is asking people in the region to dig deep into pockets and pocketbooks to help their fellow man. So far, the appeal is working.

This year's campaign is going well, with 50 percent of the goal already collected as of Friday. That compares favorably to last year at this time, but a higher goal means more dollars in hand. This year's goal is $520,000.

More than 10 companies have shown significant increases in their contributions this year. And some of the major contributors have yet to make their donations. The fact donations have come from all ages -- senior citizens to elementary school students -- is also heartwarming.

The United Way benefits some 26 service agencies that truly touch all corners of the region. But it can't work if you don't work to give that donation. Dig deep and then stand back to watch the Area Wide United Way make a difference in bettering both people and the community at large.
