TRAIL OFFERS NEW VISTAS

Walkers, joggers, bicyclists and skaters can now enjoy the first leg of what will become a trail several miles long as part of the city's west-end flood-control project.

The completed mile-long section of the Cape LaCroix Creek Recreation Trail stretches along Kingshighway from Independence to beneath Route K and southward to Brink Street. When the four-phase project is finished it will reach from Osage Park to Arena Park, then on southward to Shawnee Park on the city's south side. Much of it will run along the creeks that the multimillion-dollar flood-control project is designed to keep under control.

Residents who have already experienced the trail describe it as a pleasant blend of town and country. It gives people an opportunity to enjoy the outdoors -- whether they are walking, jogging or riding -- without having to worry about traffic.

With more people looking for enjoyable ways to exercise, the trail should see increased usage as it nears completion. It is a good addition to the flood-control project that will finally end the ravaging flash-floods that have plagued the west end over the years.
