Tradition is the handing down of customs from one generation to the next; patriotism is the love, support and defense of one's country. Celebrating the Fourth of July, our country's birthday, represents the epitome of both patriotism and tradition. Those of us who call this region home are well known for both our traditions and our patriotism.
USA Veterans, the group that has taken the task of providing the celebration for Cape Girardeau, is no different. We believe that allowing an issue as small as budget concerns stop the tradition and diminish the patriotism is just out of the question. We are grateful for the many businesses and citizens who are helping with our efforts, but we need additional help to continue our mission.
Our hope is that many more of the businesses and citizens in Cape Girardeau and the surrounding area see the importance of keeping the tradition of celebrating the Fourth of July and will join us by offering monetary assistance.
Our thanks to those who were listed in the April 4 edition of the Southeast Missourian, and we would very much like to see your names added to that list. Donations may be sent to: USA Veterans, P.O. Box 840, Cape Girardeau, MO 63702-0840.
We look forward to seeing you at the celebration in Arena Park on the Fourth of July.
RODGER O. BROWN, commander, USA Veterans, Cape Girardeau
