Santa Claus will deliver Christmas gifts to more than 1,200 local children, thanks to the Cape Jaycees, which collects gifts and monetary donations for children in need. The deadline to contribute to the 41st annual Toybox program is fast approaching -- just two days away, on Dec. 18.
Twenty-five vans with 25 Santas go to the homes. Toys are delivered personally.
"It's really neat to see the responses of the kids whenever Santa shows up at their front door," program coordinator Tracy Haggerty told the Southeast Missourian.
Putting together such a program is never easy. It takes organization, promotion and community cooperation -- and all of that has to come together during what is arguably the busiest time of year. But those who lend their hands and their hearts to the endeavor know that the looks on those little faces make it all worthwhile.
Dec. 18 is also the deadline to contribute to Christmas for the Elderly, another program that the Cape Jaycees host. We often associate Christmas with children, but Santa does not mind dropping in to see grandparents, also. Some elderly members in our community do not have anyone with whom to spend the holidays or are in need of items such as pharmaceuticals, groceries and clothing. Christmas for the Elderly is committed to filling the void.
We are increasingly aware of the generosity of our community, especially at this time of year. The many who give to others make Christmas so much more enjoyable, less lonely, for those who are less fortunate. If you would like to be a part of one or both of these worthwhile programs, you may drop off your donations at the Southeast Missourian at 301 Broadway between today and Friday. Toys for Toybox donations may also be dropped off at other participating businesses.
