Just as so many of us don't have to worry about where our next meal is coming from, most of us have few worries about buying special holiday gifts for family and friends. Just as so many of us don't have to worry about where our next meal is coming from, most of us have few worries about buying special holiday gifts for family and friends. But, as we know, the needy are always with us.

There are two special programs that bring together generous donors of gifts and those who otherwise wouldn't receive much in the way of holiday cheer. One is for children, and the other is for the elderly.

Toybox is a program sponsored by the Cape Girardeau Jaycees and the Southeast Missouri with coordination from the Salvation Army. Its aim is to provide toys for needy children up to 12 years old. The special needs of these children are matched with donations in an effort to make sure every needy child's wish list becomes reality.

Christmas for the Elderly is coordinated by the Cape Girardeau County Public Health Center, the Missouri Division of Senior Services and the Southeast Missourian. This program fills the special requests of senior citizens who usually ask for items that fill the gaps beyond their limited incomes.

Both Toybox and Christmas for the Elderly have been an important part of the holiday season for years. During the time hundreds and hundreds of special people have made sure the needs of so many are met each year.

Many of these generous donors can be counted on to support this year's efforts. But the needs are growing. If you can help in any way, please do. And thank you.
