To the editor:
The announcement by the U.S. Justice Department that it has reached a settlement with Microsoft is great news for Missouri businesses and computer users. However, several states' attorneys general are threatening to pursue the case on their own. Obviously, some just can't let this go.
In response to this case, the Justice Department released a consumer impact statement which stated that this settlement is in the best interest of consumers and will be a benefit to the entire industry and our economy.
The settlement allows Microsoft and the technology industry to once again focus on creating better products and more choices for consumers. A recent survey of consumers issued by the Americans for Technology Coalition found that 70 percent believe this settlement is "fair and reasonable." It would appear that this country is ready to move on.
Supporters for continuing this case are the competitors of Microsoft. They are doing everything possible to stop this case from finally coming to an end.
Fortunately, Attorney General Jay Nixon has displayed wisdom by keeping Missouri out of the case. We should applaud him for doing the right thing.
