To the editor:
Three cheers for Abbey Aguirre for her wonderful, selfless work in our community and to Callie Clark for introducing Jose and Abbey to us. It's one thing to read about the numbers and the needs of the Hispanic population in general terms as they increase in our area, but it is something altogether different to be allowed to know some detail about the life of one dedicated woman who brought her big heart with her. More power to you, Abbey.
The two thumbs up are from us to Sharon Sanders for the fascinating choices for "Out of the Past" now that you are able to tell us what happened 100 years ago. Maybe our being 79 years old has something to do with it, but it thrills us, after hearing about Rutan's small commercial space ship that has been the first one in history to reach space twice within a few days, to turn to 100 years ago and read that Cape Girardeau was getting a new industry, one that manufactured the steel tires for wagon wheels, and the Presbyterian Church is soon to have two "retiring rooms" in the basement (don't bother to look in the dictionary, ask great-grandma.) and then, the soap factory was planning to warm its building in the winter -- not for the sake of the workers, but so the soap would dry. Keep 'em coming, Sharon.
