To The Editor:
As the mother of a young Marine awaiting duty in Saudi Arabia, I have an interest in those in our community who are serving in the military. After reading Ken McManaman's letter published January 10, I felt the need to respond to his comments regarding a local physician "honoring his commitment to his country."
The tone of Mr. McManaman's letter was unkind and he "missed the point" of why the physician had a "higher calling." Two seriously ill children are the reason for the appeal, nothing more. I imagine most of us would have at least considered this option if faced with the same situation. This effort does not make this physician a "prima donna" no crime has been committed, nor has patriotic duty been flaunted. A man has simply made an appeal. If it is turned down, he will be on his way.
The last few months have been an emotional time for all of us. My family and many others are affected daily by the news from the Persian Gulf. We need to support each other, try to understand what moves us to take action, and not be so critical. How else can we face what we may have before us.
