Dear Editor:
I have been reading with interest your coverage of the legislation now before Congress to re-regulate the cable industry. I think we have a good old fashioned case of a "wolf in sheep's clothing" when it comes to the cable industry's current media campaign.
The cable industry is so desperate to avoid the first serious attempt by Congress to bring its monopoly under control that they have resorted to just about anything to scare, bully, and intimidate members of Congress and its own customers. The disinformation and outright untruths coming from the cable industry are designed to make everyone overlook the title and purpose of this important legislation.
The bill is called The Cable Consumer Protection Act. Please notice the most important word in this bill is "consumer," and the action word is "protection." Congress obviously believes that the cable industry has abused its monopoly status to such a degree that the we consumers need "protection" against it in the future.
This legislation is for the consumers everywhere. Let's hope it passes. And the next time cable threatens to raise your rates, consider the source.
Sincerely,
Howard W. Meagle
