To the editor:

On Oct. 24 on the Southeast Missouri State University campus there will be a special program bringing veterans, students, organizations and the Stars and Stripes Museum together for Generations in Valor, a tribute to veterans and the significant role they played in shaping our nation's history.

The goal of Generations in Valor is a celebration of the courage and example given from one generation to succeeding generations, specifically passing on the actions of valor by our veterans to the youths of our country by offering presentations about the reasons veterans risked their lives for their families and their country.

Part of the program will be a presentation by Brothers in Valor, three brothers who fought in World War II along with another brother who lost his life at Midway. A Navy ship was named after the deceased brother. The goal is to encourage mentoring, with valor as a means of moving our country in a direction that improves the quality of life for everyone and ensures our liberty.

Generations in Valor is a joint effort of mentoring programs, the university, schools, chambers of commerce, veterans organizations, civic organizations, churches and interested individuals. Donations for the event will be administered by the Stars and Stripes Museum, a not-for-profit organization.

We encourage school districts to allow students to attend this educational opportunity. This is a great opportunity to learn about our nation's history firsthand from individuals who have helped mold the history of our nation while in uniform and later as community leaders.MARK RICHARDSON
