OH MY goodness, the headline about the Lexington Street church that had its windows shot out. Boy, I bet the Realtors won't be showing any houses in that part of town anymore. I bet it's scary over there on Lexington. Maybe you west-side-of-towners will be thinking differently about downtown Cape now. We don't have shootouts of church windows downtown.
I'M CALLING in regard to the "Jesse Jackson, back off" item in Speak Out. Personally, I think he's doing great things, even though you might say it's not looking good for the black people. I think it's very helpful that he's coming out of his busy schedule in Chicago to try to help those children in the Decatur fight incident. Yes, I think it's wrong for them to kick the kids out of school for two years while they're seniors and about to graduate. We don't know what the problem was or what even started the fight at the football game. I have a nephew in the Decatur school. He's wanting to go to school. I think it's very wrong. The Decatur school needs help. I think he's doing a very good job, and I do think it's wrong for the students to be suspended for a whole two years. Jesse Jackson is doing a great job.
JESSE JACKSON really likes his picture in the paper. He wants to be in front of the cameras for a free photo op. It doesn't matter what the cause is. Just get his name and face out there for the world to see. Arrogance? I guess so.
IT CRACKS me up when people like Cal Thomas and the Speak Out callers quote Scripture from the Bible. If they want to read the Bible and quote Scripture, fine, go ahead. But I don't need to read it in the newspaper. Calling in and quoting Scripture is the same as me calling in and quoting fairy tales, like Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs. There's no proof that their Scriptures even happened. Enough is enough.
Read my lips ...LIKE THAT old saying, the acorn doesn't fall far from the tree. George W. Bush in the last few days has shown that he is his father's son. As all of you should remember, the first act of Papa Bush upon being nominated as candidate, was to choose that paragon of mediocrity Dan Quayle as his running mate. Then at the convention he promised with a straight face, "Read my lips. No new taxes." We all know that this never happened. Bush Senior did such a poor job that he was not re-elected. His mediocre son, who has not done his homework and has a very poor grasp of the world and his understanding of the military coup on Pakistan proves this. Even when he does know, he lacks the composure and presence of mind to know how to handle a question. When a writer who has covered the White House since the days of Truman was asked who would he consider to be the worst president, in terms of ability, he said "George Bush was an empty suit, and was vacuous." His son couldn't learn very much at his father's knee. Read my lips. No new Bush.
I'VE BEEN reading all these people complaining about our cops catching people speeding and DWIs. If they don't speed or drive drunk, they don't have a thing to worry about.
I'D LIKE somebody to tell us how Jesse Jackson supports himself, or is he supported by somebody else? Even though he's supposed to be a minister, he doesn't minister to a church. So why is he called a reverend? Those young men who were fighting in the stadium were hoodlums. I bet Bill Cosby would not support their actions. I think Mr. Jackson needs to remove himself and stay out of other people's business.
THERE'S BEEN a lot of talk in Speak Out recently about the Ten Commandments in school. One caller suggested that it might be zeroing in on the Christian viewpoint and ignoring the other people who practice different religions in our community. Another person said that person was wrong, that our country was founded by people who were Christians. If they will look back, they will understand our country was founded by people who were under political and religious persecution, and their reason for founding this country was for tolerance in these areas. This person is not practicing tolerance at all. If people would practice tolerance for other people's viewpoints and religions, then we would not have the problems that we have today. Understanding that other people are different, and have a right to be different, is how we learn to live together.
