THERE WAS SO much wisdom in Rush Limbaugh's interview on his grandson's radio show last Friday. If only people would heed it, we could solve a lot of our problems. For instance, the story about the country school teacher who, his father said, had to go because he couldn't keep order. He said if you can't keep order you can't teach. All the innovative programs in the world won't help our schools unless we see to it that our teachers can keep order.
I FIND THE articles written by Mona Charen in the Southeast Missourian sexist and conservative. She seeks to bring back the stigma of unwed motherhood, which was fostered by a double-standard society. What is really needed is sex education in the schools. That would go a long way in helping to diminish unwanted pregnancies, not sexist, double-standard name calling on females. Thank you.
I WOULD LIKE to comment about the congressmen who have bounced all of these bad checks. I think since they appointed all these special prosecutors this is a perfect place for one. We need a special prosecutor to prosecute all these people. It's illegal what they've done. It's as bad as not balancing the budget and violating the Gramm-Rudman Act. We should write Emerson, our senators, and write to the president and tell him we want a special prosecutor. Let's get to the bottom of it. Thank you.
GEORGE BUSH A few days ago said that if the unemployment compensation bill passed Congress he would veto it. He also said that his reason for vetoing it was because he had to consider the taxpayers of this country. Who does he think these people are who are among the unemployed? They are taxpayers who at the moment are unemployed and are unable not only to pay taxes but to pay their bills and feed themselves. He has found it logical for some reason or another to give the Egyptians $7 billion, to give the Russians food and money, to give everybody in the world money except American citizens. If he's so willing and so concerned about the American taxpayers, then remember that they are the ones who have elected him, are paying him, and are in need. He ought to be intelligent enough to realize that it's time for him to consider them instead of everybody else on Earth. Take care of American citizens first and dispense with this foreign aid baloney. Why we are keeping the whole world is beyond me, and it is also beyond everybody else. George Bush, wise up. Thank you.
DID YOU SEE President Bush at the music awards Wednesday night at Nashville? I can't imagine him riding around in that big plane at our expense. He sure sets a good example. I hope he doesn't get elected again or our money will all be gone. Thank you.
IN THE WEDNESDAY paper, Oct. 2, Jack Stapleton is very much opposed to term limitations in Congress both in state and federal government. He compared it to limiting a surgeon to eight years of practice and being allowed to drive a car or teach school or repair a watch. He wants us to believe that limiting terms will bring us incompetence. It is not the same thing. Congress spends our money as if it grew like dandelions. Would we put our money in a bank that did likewise? No, we would change banks. We have a right to change our congressmen. We are not paying 12 percent interest on municipal bonds that will run well past the year 2000. Do you call that competence? No one knows how much Missouri is in debt and we can never pay it or our federal debt in our lifetime.
IN REGARDS to your article about child support and deadbeat dads, let me give you an instance where Ms. Ward is wrong. I overpaid my child support that was garnished by her agency, the state agency, matter of fact by quite a few dollars. When I went to them and asked what they were going to do about it they said they couldn't help me. It was like $600 or $700. Whenever it comes down to the man who overpaid child support it's hard to retrieve it back from the state because they will not help the man get it. It's all for the woman. Thank you.
I TAKE ISSUE with Jack Stapleton's editorial Oct. 2 on term limitations. Has he had his head in the sand? Does he listen to national news? How about congressional bank overdrafts with no penalty; unpaid debts at their restaurant? When they are in Congress for long periods they acquire too much power, and power corrupts. So what does experience get us? They make laws and exempt themselves from the laws or ignore the ones they are exempted from. They ignore the Gramm-Rudman law that is supposed to balance the budget. Let's clean House and Senate, too, before the new world order takes all our constitutional rights away.
IT LOOKS LIKE Thursday night it'll be Jackson Indians 21, Cape Central Little Kittens 0. You'll be out-coached and outplayed. I've seen both teams play, and Central doesn't have but two or three players who could play for the mighty Indians. Maybe the rest could play our Junior High team. At least the Indians give an effort. We play teams who are much better than Central. So look out, Little Kittens, you are finished Thursday night. You'll be the second best team in the county, and there are only two of us.
I AM ASTONISHED that a number of parents of Southeast Missouri State University students have as yet to have heard about Proposition B. Where have they been for the last three or four months?
