I WOULD LIKE to thank the city of Jackson along with radio station Y105 for the wonderful fireworks display that they had on the Fourth of July. The music that they played, the patriotic songs, gave a new meaning to the Fourth of July. I don't think I've ever been to a fireworks display that meant so much to me. Thanks so much for a job well done...

THIS IS A special thank you to the Jackson Jaycees for a grand and glorious Fourth of July. Prior commitments kept us from participating in all activities, but the parade, band concert and fireworks were great.

ON THE EVENING news July 4, a newscaster made a remark about Andre Agassi, the tennis player, couldn't win the big one. If she would have watched the tennis match this afternoon, she would have noted that he was injured early on in the match and was lucky to even finish it. I think he showed a lot guts. Thank you.

I AGREE WITH the caller who said that campus kid care is unfair. It sure is. What about the students who don't need nighttime care? Their money's going to be used for that. I agree. I think my tax money can be better spent than giving money to college students to go to school. I don't go to school and I think the tax money for highways is wrong because some people don't drive cars. Get a clue.

DEADLY AIDS is amongst us with a university-sanctioned homosexual-lesbian chapter on campus; hard-drug usage is commonplace in our young; prevalent alcoholism is flourishing in all age groups; young females are increasingly loading up our welfare rolls with single-parent offsprings, and vandalism is rampant even in our graveyards. But finally, a bright ray of hope pierces the dark clouds of immorality overhanging Cape Girardeau. With the gleaming sword of righteousness raised high in indignation, our city council charges into the fray to sever the bonds of human evil, thundering the soul-stirring chant: No smoking allowed in the artichokes. Perhaps never again are we likely to witness such indomitable bravery. Flag burners, pornographers, traitors, and other sundry sinners, beware ere your crimes be deemed as offensive as cigarette smoke in the kumquats.

THIS IS TO the SEMO student wanting the city of Cape to voice their opinion concerning his hurt education. It seems to me that's the wrong group of people to speak in your behalf. It's obvious to me that the students of SEMO have a big say in not only how SEMO is run but also the city of Cape. Look at the smoking issue. Had it not been for you students, that would never have happened. So my opinion would be to get a class together and march upon city hall and demand that the campus group give you better buildings, better professors, and better facilities. I just thought the city council will go out of their way to help you. And while you're at it, get that child care straightened out, too. I'm so confident of the city council, in all their infinite wisdom. Just look at the commentary Mrs. Wulfers gave the other night concerning the smoking issue, about the ash being dropped on the strawberry, I mean, is that brilliant or what? They'll also help you with this issue. Good Luck.

I'M CALLING IN just to say that I thought the cartoon with the Jehovah's Witnesses is kind of cute.

I WANTED TO call in and compliment First General Baptist Church on their Freedom Celebration '91. I certainly enjoyed it. It was a very patriotic and moving celebration. The only thing I recommend, would it be possible next year when you have another one, could you have a matinee? I have some friends who live out of town and it takes a couple of hours to get to Cape, and I would love for them to see it next year. But they could only come to the matinee because they can't drive late at night. Thanks again for putting on a wonderful show. We all enjoyed it.

I DON'T BELIEVE you want any more of my Speak Out. I believe it is because I give old Peter Kinder such a rough time. Thank you. Speak Out.

THE JACKSON JAYCEES did a wonderful job on the fireworks display the evening of the Fourth. The radio station, Y105, played patriotic music that was just great. It was an awe-inspiring program.

I WOULD LIKE FOR you all to know that Barbara Mandrell got on the Disneyland show yesterday and said she was a real American, her whole family was for good America. Well, why don't you look and see what she drives? It's a foreign car. She buys her children foreign cars, she has her china shipped from foreign countries, and she calls herself American. Forget it.

PETER KINDER: Three days have passed since your criticism in the Southeast Missourian of the Democrats on Capitol Hill, and I'm still seething. Peter, you have struck again with your poison pen. In your opinion, you are so definite Democrats will not approve Clarence Thomas because they disapproved of Bork; however, you do not comment on the fact that Kennedy was strictly approved. That would be giving the Democrats too much credit, and you can't risk that. Since you are such a lover of the Republican Party, why don't you support President Bush by helping us all make this a kindlier, gentler nation. Thank you.

AS EXPECTED, the Cape City Council has bowed to the whim of immature campus gadflies and thus alienated one-third of the adult voters. One is left to wonder as to the amount of success they may experience in any future political aspirations. To further infringe on dwindling personal freedoms with unwanted, unwarranted, and likely an unenforceable no-smoking ordinance was the epitome of political naivete. It is certainly hoped that the five majority members who seem overly concerned with our health will muster the courage to run for public office again. Bureaucratic tyranny always exacts a price, albeit paid at a later date.
