Welfare regrets

I SEE that the U.S. House is shoving welfare reform as it concerns the elderly and senior citizens. I regret that very much, and I think they shall also in the long run. We conservatives do not fault a person for accumulating property and leaving it to their heirs. Actually, I don't think there should be any punitive charges or tax to it at all, but we conservatives find fault with the fact that it's a dirty little secret that most elderly are not at the poverty level. They're giving their property to their children, and then they're turning right around and living off the taxpayer dollar in the form of Medicare and under every other social program available. This will stop just as surely as any kind of welfare that is not desperately and truly needed to maintain the barest life of existence.

Get a new picture, Jay

I HAVE a comment for Jay Eastlick. I'm really starting to enjoy your columns, but many times it's hard for me to get past your picture. Surely, Jay, that scraggly beard of yours has either grown or been shaved off by now. You look like a vagrant. How about a new picture, Jay? Keep up the good work on the columns.

Need stricter principal

FOR THE past few weeks, I've been doing volunteer work at Washington School. I've noticed that although the principal is trying her best with discipline problems, her best is not good enough. I think we need a more stricter and more consistent principal, and we need one now. Things are really getting out of hand there.

Favors police program

I THINK the new federal program to add hundreds of police officers nationwide is one of the greatest things to come out of Washington in a long time. It sure beats the tar out of the Slick Willie-Brady Bill boondoggle that's not doing anything but hurting a few innocent, honest people. President Teddy Roosevelt said something almost 90 years ago for the Clinton worshipers to think about: Every citizen in the United States should respect the office of the president, but no one is obligated to respect any snaky scoundrel that happens to be holding the office at that time.
