I WOULD like to say a couple of words about Jay Eastlick's article concerning Connie Chung and Newt Gingrich's mother. Grow up. I certainly don't want to have to defend Connie Chung because I don't believe she's a great reporter, but you can't expect her not to use that interview material...

Grow up, Jay

I WOULD like to say a couple of words about Jay Eastlick's article concerning Connie Chung and Newt Gingrich's mother. Grow up. I certainly don't want to have to defend Connie Chung because I don't believe she's a great reporter, but you can't expect her not to use that interview material.

Petitioners should run

I WOULD like to challenge those who led the petition drive approximately a year ago to oust Superintendent Clark from the public school system to file for the school board so the schools can get all their problems solved and run as a perfect institution, because I'm sure if they were elected this would surely happen.

No to nudie bars

THIS IS response to the "Get ready" comment in the Sunday paper. The person evidently doesn't understand what a tax base is. The state of the urban decay, if you can call it urban in Cape Girardeau, is evident. The nudie bars could kill us all.

Old fossil, new face

IN REGARDS to the revolutionary conservative, he's simply an old fossil with a new face. That's nothing new about selling that bill of goods. They sold us that bill of goods about too much government back 1932. They were defeated. Then they sold us that bill of goods in 1946 and then they were elected but they only lasted two years. Then they sold that bill of goods to us about too much government back in 1952 and they were defeated in 1954. They were always going to clean house, these conservative Republicans, but the house does not stay clean too long. About Newt Gingrich needing a chance. All political figures, when they elect them, that's chance. Yes, Newt Gingrich needs a chance.

Likes the games

I'M SORRY to hear that some viewers would rather watch regularly scheduled programs than University of Kentucky basketball, but for me and a lot of others, UK games are the highlight of the TV watching week.

Feminists are lost

AN EMPLOYMENT agency reports that 82 percent of professional women prefer a career with flexible hours and slower career advancement. Where 52 percent of mothers are employed, only 13 percent want to be. The feminist today are decrying the fact that they have not many women and not much of a movement. The aging feminist complain bitterly that young career women refused to be called feminist. The feminists lost their movement in the early 1970s by proclaiming women as victims, laying a guilt trip on men and demanding retribution. But you can't fool all of all of the time and in the process the American people have had their own conscientiousness raised. They discovered that the feminist movement is both socially destructive and personally disappointing. A Time/CNN poll confirmed that 64 percent of women do not want to call themselves feminist. Maybe we have a chance yet.

The Billy and Al Show

I SEE in this morning's paper that the Billy and Al Show are at the vote-buying bar again with a 23 1/2 percent increase for the minimum wage. And who do you suppose is going to pay that 23 1/2 percent? You and I, laborers, you and I, union members, you and I, people who work and live on limited income are going to pay for it while they are also try to figure out how they can beat the Republicans out and collect more taxes from us.

Keep the games on

COME ON guys, lighten up on complaining about UK basketball games on KFVS. They are not on KFVS that often, and you do have other channels to choose from if you don't want to watch. Besides, I would rather my kids watch a UK ballgame than be exposed to some of the other trash on TV nowadays. Thank you, KFVS, for bringing us fans the games.

Gracious Hillary

I APPLAUD our first lady, Hillary Clinton, for her graciousness for inviting Newtie and his mother to tour the White House. I wonder if those two accepted the invitation or are too ignorant even to apologize for the situation that they created with their big mouths.

New taxpayer

I'M KIND of new at this, but I just paid my county taxes my first time. I just want to know why do I have to pay taxes on top of my taxes. I asked them where the money went and they didn't even know. I just wondered if anyone out there could explain it to me.

Support SEMO women

MY WIFE and I belong to the boosters club at SEMO. We go to all the girls and boys basketball games. Last Saturday night the boys played at 5:00. The girls played at 7:30. I was very angry and disappointed when the boys game was over. The fans got up and left. By 7:30, most of the fans had left. I also noticed that a lot of the faculty and higher ups at SEMO left. I think it is a shame more fans don't support the girls. I think the girls played as hard as the boys. We enjoy both boys and girls, and I think the girls deserve more support.

A correlation?

THE HIGHER the cost of stamps, the later the mail.

Thank you, carriers

I DON'T know whether it was done on purpose, but I want to thank the carriers who threw the paper into the grass these last few days when it was so icy. I happen to live on a very steep driveway, and I could not have possibly gotten down or back up to get my paper. So just tell your carriers, whether they thought of it or it just happened to land there, but it's an excellent idea to throw it on the grass when it's icy like that.

Riverboat protest

I READ Speak Out today about a person calling in and saying they will have protests demonstrations to get the nudie bars out of Cape. Well, the same can be said about riverboat gambling. Why don't they walk in protest about the riverboat downtown and let it get out of town also?

Seat-belt safety

THIS IS in regards to the person who called in about people being killed in car accidents wearing their seat belts just as many times as people who don't wear their seat belts. I want this person to know, this summer two of my friends and I were involved in a car accident. The person who hit me was not wearing a seat belt. He hit the windshield with his head. The police told me and my friends that we were lucky that we not injured seriously. We were lucky to even be alive.
