Everyone's a critic

I DON'T have to be a movie or music critic to agree with Bob Dole on his stance on sex and violence in movies and music. Even our liberal president agrees with him.

Gangs on Broadway

IN REFERENCE to the youth gangs hanging around Broadway with guns, I think it's about time the police crack down on these people. There should be a curfew. And I also would arrest the parents. Where in the world are the parents when their kids are out at 11:30 at night with a gun? Parents should know where their kids are at all times.

Too many taxes

I HAVE lived, worked and paid taxes in Cape Girardeau for 50 years. I am not retired or living on a fixed income, but I am going to be forced to sell my home and move out of Cape Girardeau, because I simply cannot keep up with all the taxes. This sewer tax and water tax are getting to be a little ridiculous. We people on fixed incomes can only pay so much. It seems like they want to raise water and sewer rates every year. I have stopped recycling simply for the reason that the city is not enforcing it, and why should I pay $12.13 a month for trash when I don't even have one full bag and my neighbors have three and four? I am sorry that I might have to leave Cape, but if all these taxes are put on us, I will have no other choice.

Balancing the whining

THE FRANTIC whining from liberals, atheists and other crazies is rapidly becoming irrelevant. They had their chance to screw up our society for decades, and they've done a darn fine job. Now they're all in frenzy because straight folks like Bob Dole and, closer to home, the likes of Peter Kinder and Jay Eastlick are exposing their rotten values. Thanks, Mr. Kinder, for eloquently describing how much of our tax dollars are still being wasted on social sewage like Hillary's National Endowment for the Arts.

Cigarette signs

I CAN'T believe some Americans get so steamed up over a cigarette sign at a baseball park. In years gone by we had respect, morality and caring for other human beings and tobacco. Today we have students with little respect for teachers or parents, lack of morality like Soddom and Gomorrah, human selfishness caring for one's self and a cigarette sign in a baseball park. Wake up, America.

Enforce speed laws

I AM in favor of strictly enforcing the speed limits, especially on Mount Auburn Road. Between the hours of 7 and 9 a.m. it is not unusual to be passed by motorists who are undoubtedly running late for work. In fact, you're as likely to passed on the right as on the left. If these habitual late-runners would get off their backsides a little earlier in the morning, they wouldn't have to resort to speeding. My only complaint is that the police often sit at the base of the large hills on Mount Auburn where it's practically impossible to stay under the speed limit without riding the brakes all the way down the hill. Running radar at these locations seems slightly unprofessional.

Support the police

I AGREE with your response to the person who complained about radar monitoring. Yes it's hard to understand why law-abiding motorists would be concerned about the use of traffic radar. I asked that same question when we in Advance had a police force that monitored traffic and issued traffic violations, a police force whose surveillance led to the arrest of people dealing in drugs. People who violate the law or people who have something to hide holler the loudest. Sometimes they get attention as evident here in Advance when a weak, new administration removed the entire police force, yielding to those who yelled the loudest. I urge law-abiding citizens in Cape to support the police. Don't let a few control your policies and end up like Advance.
