Look back

I THINK there should be an investigation into the Bush administration and the Reagan administration on taking money out of Social Security and giving it to the postal employees for raises. I think also the Bush administration should be investigated on the bank frauds and also the oil frauds while he was in office. They talk about this Clinton Whitewater deal. If it was done, which I doubt, it was done before he was in office. But Bush was in office like President Nixon was, if you will rightly remember, when the money was stolen from Social Security and given to the postal employees. It was never paid back and neither was the interest. I can tell you a lot about Social Security and how the government, under the Reagan and Bush administrations, has stolen from people.

Punishing jerks

NOW THAT the creeps who allegedly destroyed the tombstones in Lorimier Cemetery have been caught, I strongly urge whoever is responsible for punishing the little jerks that they not be incarcerated. Instead, they should be made to pay, clean up and work in the cemetery until they feel that they have redeemed themselves, or longer if that's possible. Also, the parents ought to be punished as well for not having taught the little jerks any better manners.

In need of help

I JUST heard that Louis Farrakan and Moammar Khadafi are teaming up to fight our country from within for the sake of all our oppressed people. I would like to nominate Bill and Hillary Clinton as our two most oppressed people. Ever since they moved to Washington, D.C., they have been attacked, besieged, beleaguered, sued, had their house shot at and slander. I certainly hope Farrakhan and Khadafi can help. Otherwise, we may not be able to attract good candidates for public office in the future.

Jackson library

SOMEBODY NEEDS to put the Jackson City Council and Jackson Library Board in touch with the people. If you listen to people expressing themselves, you learn that, one, they didn't want a tax increase. No matter what the tax increase is for, when you say higher taxes, some people vote no. Two, some people didn't like the proposed location for the new library building. And the no vote for consolidation of the library and the new building was not against the consolidation but was against the location and the increased taxes. But it did not say that Jackson residents don't support their public library, and the city council has plenty of money to continue paying its share of the library costs. The firing of one capable employee with a degree in library science and the downgrading of the library was a big step backward for Jackson.

Reducing crime

WE HAVE heard much in the news about getting tough with criminals, hiring more police and building more prisons, all of which are done after crimes have been committed to scare people who might commit crimes. Very little has been in the news about the development of criminals and using better methods to keep people from starting activity in crime. Are our universities doing any research on the evolvement of crime? There may be a more effective way to reduce crime in addition to the methods that are now being used.

College bands

I WAS just wondering why the Show Me Center hasn't had any concerts in the recent months? I know the last concerts failed to have that many tickets sold but I was wondering they haven't even tried to get a college type group such as Live or Toad the Wet Sprocket. I feel that when college is in session they should at least try to get some bands like that.

Tough prosecution

ANYONE WHO saw or read about the puppy mill in Birch Tree and is upset about it needs to realize that all that is going to happen to these sick people is they will lose their breeder's license. These people still have dogs in their custody. What pain and suffering they must be going through at this very moment. If you want these people to be prosecuted and fined to the fullest extent the law allows, please take a moment of your time and a 32 cent stamp and write to Sen. Peter Kinder, State Capitol Building, Room 431, Jefferson City, Mo. 65101.

Too much Super Bowl

I LIKE football, I watch it a lot, I'm very interested in it. But I am so tired of hearing about the Super Bowl. We even get menus from all over the place about it. I wish they'd knock it off.

Not funny

THE COMMENT regarding Peggy O'Farrell's column in the Jan. 26 Speak Out, "The worst animal," was right on line. There's nothing funny about death, no matter what kind of animal you are. Personally, someone sitting in a restaurant eating fish and commenting on another fish being eaten by yet another animal is not funny. It's downright hypocritical.

Good coverage

CONGRATULATIONS to the Southeast Missourian for the fine, Christian, decent, fair way they covered the Jane Elliott seminar last Tuesday at the University Center in Cape. They wrote a very nice story on Jane.

Remember Hoover

COMMENT WAS made by an 80-year-old man about something about Roosevelt's days. If that guy can remember back, why doesn't he remember back a little further into Hoover days. I remember Hoover's days, and I remember what the Republicans did then. It wouldn't surprise me to have some of our servicemen killed in Bosnia any day now. I think the Republicans would pay someone a big bonus to kill them to make President Clinton look bad. I think they're desperate because things are going so well.

Library trash

THERE HAS been debris around the bushes in front of the library for the last three months.

Commerce alive

THIS IS in regards to news reports that all the citizens moving out of Commerce. The report of our death and demise is greatly exaggerated. I hope people will come back in about five years and see what the town looks like. It should be greatly improved. There are still more people going to stay than what anyone ever thought, and more people are moving in. We might be on life support ever once in a while, but we're not dead, and we will come back.
