HOW CAN any organization or business or person pay off their debt just by balancing their budget?
REGARDING the government shutdown: I am so sick of the Republicans blaming the president. It's both their faults. It really stinks that they voted to keep their salaries, to keep being paid when there are so many people out of work right now. And I wish that the legislators from Missouri would stand up and say something if they care about the citizens of this state. They're getting paid a lot more than some of these people will ever see in their life, and they with each other. It's sickening.
IF AN outside consultant has to be paid $90,000 from federal and state funds to map out parking and directional signs for SEMO, perhaps authorities should hire employees who can choose personnel capable of finding directions to their own school.
A SENIOR citizen in Wednesday's Speak Out was shocked to discover his taxes to the school were three-fourths of his tax bill. Well, I'm a senior citizen in Jackson who pays 82.5 percent of his taxes to the schools. The other 17.5 percent goes for the rest of government. Our schools are draining the money from all other needs, and they still holler for more, and they're doing less with the more than they've ever done in the past. They've had about all the money they need. What they need to do now is repeal Carnahan's taxes going to the schools and straighten them out.
JUST A word about the government workers that are shutdown or locked out with any pay. I know some federal workers who are on sick leave and draw full pay and drive vehicles.
I JUST thought I'd let you folks know that the picture of the owl that you have on the front page of your Jan. 4 edition is not a barn owl. Barn owls don't have tufts.
I'M CALLING to make a correction. You have a picture of an owl in a tree and you have down that it is a barn owl and that it prefers the hollow tree to a barn. That is not a barn owl. That owl has ear tufts, and barn owls do not have ear tufts. That owl is most probably an Eastern screech owl, and it's very normal for them to nest or roost in hollows of tree.
PERHAPS THE reason the owl prefers the hollow of a tree is because it is not a barn owl. You have printed a beautiful photograph of a screech owl. It's song is a whistle or series of short notes, and it prefers to nest in cavities and occasionally in flicker boxes. The owl in the picture appears to be in it's red phase. Thank you, and enjoy your bird watching.
A LITTLE more research might be in order. That is not a barn owl.
I'D LIKE to make a comment about Dr. Ritter's statement in Thursday's paper. He's talking about hiring a new superintendent for Cape Girardeau and he states he doesn't want a public relations man. What a ridiculous statement to make. I wonder if Dr. Ritter doesn't use good public relations in his own personal business.
THIS IS election year. We need to fire Bill Clinton. We fired a war hero and gave the job to a draft dodger. Look at what is needlessly going on in Bosnia with our leadership. Also, we need to vote out all liberal judges and change liberal laws. Why should a person committing a crime be given the same privilege as a person respecting the law and doing what is right?
I'D JUST like to make a comment about the government shutdown. We've doing fine without them right now, so what's the point the of putting them back? Look at the money we'd save. Sure, people would lose their jobs. People lose their jobs every day, and that's just the facts of life.
