THIS IS a concerned resident of Cape Girardeau, and I've lived in Missouri all my life, and I'm a Republican. But I would like to say one thing: I have changed this last time. I will not be a Republican any more. I will change to a Democrat, or I will go for a third party. As for being liars, President Clinton is not a liar. He has done everything he said he would do. He said he would protect the poor people. I'm with him when he sticks to his guns on Medicare and everything else, and I'll vote for him again when he comes in. Take Gingrich and all of them up there -- I went and voted a straight Republican ticket this last time -- and I'll tell you I've never seen such a bunch of lying, thieving people in my life. I would rather have a liar around me than a thief. All they care about is themselves. They want everybody else to take a cut. Let them take a cut. Bill Emerson has got my last vote. And I'll tell you something else: If those people down there in the Veterans' Hospital die because of lack of money and stuff, it's the Republicans' fault, it's not Clinton's.
ON OUR license plates, I'd like them to put the mule and maybe some mountains of the Ozarks. But I think more than anything, the license plate should have a mule on it. And I'll tell you why. The mule is the Show Me State, that's our emblem, just like the cardinal is in Illinois. And I think that we should have our emblem on our license plate.
I KNOW you're supposed to write what you know, but is there a way Mark Bliss could write an article not featuring his kids?
I JUST wanted to say thanks to the little boy who helped two stranded ladies in the mall parking lot one evening last week. There were no security officers or anyone around to help, but this young boy was more than happy to help us stranded ladies. It's really great to know there's still kids out there to help out.
I'M PRETTY new to Cape Girardeau. I've been here about six months or so. Born and raised on the East Coast most of my life and used to snowstorms of a foot or more at a time. I have to say that I've been pretty impressed with how the highway department and the city of Cape cleared the roads this snowfall. I think these guys did a really good job and deserve a hand.
HOW MANY people out there watched the game between SEMO and Missouri? I think everyone who goes to the game Jan. 11 ought to hide their faces. After watching this game, SEMO was playing worse than they were 10 years ago. Central High School could probably beat SEMO, it's sad to say. Shumate needs to have his players watch the film over and over again so he can get his players straightened out.
THIS IS on the upbeat side of the Southeast Missouri basketball team. So what, they lost to Missouri. But, hey, they're opening the OVC Saturday night, and their starting with a 0-0 record. Maybe they'll be on the winning side this time.
IT'S NO secret that government workers are overwhelmingly Democrats, because they are on the receiving end of the Democratic tax-and-spend policies. So is it any wonder that these workers blame the Republicans for their woes? Government workers have extremely good jobs with extremely good benefits. What other company pays its laid-off workers back pay when they return to their jobs? These whining federal workers are finally seeing how the rest of the world operates, and they don't like what they see. I think a good dose of reality is in order for these people.
ON THE front page of the Jan. 4 issue there's a picture of an owl that was identified as a barn owl. However, it is in fact the brown face of a screech owl which normally nests in roofs and cavities where as the barn owl sometime does use a barn. That's not a barn owl. It's a screech owl.
THE OWL that's pictured in the paper that's called a barn owl is not a barn owl. It's more likely a young great horned owl. A barn owl does not have ears.
AM I the only taxpayer concerned that SEMO is paying $90,000 to develop a plan to spell out the school's physical needs for the next 20 years and that $70,000 of the cost will be paid with federal and state money? Why bring in chiefs to make these decisions when there are enough on the reservations who know more about the problems and needs than chiefs from reservations in Kansas City and Denver?
THE CALLER who characterized Clinton voters as ignorant might be a little harsh, because many of the people who voted for him were fooled by his unkept promises and would never vote for him again. However, the caller makes an excellent observation in wondering why the rest of these Clinton voters are now against the Republicans who are now trying to follow through on the promises Clinton failed to keep. I think the words "brainwashed" or "programmed" might better describe this group of voters.
ABOUT THE concealed weapons law: I think it would be a good idea and should be passed because for one thing it will even up the odds and another, it's better to have a gun and not need it than to not have a gun and need it.
THIS IS about the new Missouri license plate. I think everyone's in agreement that they don't want a mule's rear end or Rush Limbaugh's face stuck in the center of their license plate. Why not consider using the state tree, the dogwood, and the bluebird, which are both beautiful Missouri symbols? I think most will agree it will be more pleasing than the two above.
I'VE JUST called the insurance company where I have my car insurance to find out why the premium had increased. The explanation that the agent gave me is sad. We're paying for people who drive their automobiles without insurance, have wrecks and get out of having to pay for it. That's not fair to the people who are on a fixed income and try to drive their car just a short mileage every year to go to the grocery store and the doctor and maybe once in a while to friends' houses. There's nothing at all fair about this. Something definitely should be done. They ought to have it when you go to get your driver's license or the license for your automobile, if you don't have insurance, then you get no license. Then if you get caught driving without your license, you should really get in trouble for it.
I'M CALLING concerning the fishermen on the Diversion Channel. They seem to be going down the channel to get to the Mississippi River for fishing. It seems that they would want to get a petition going to get the boat dock into Commerce as soon as possible, because then you have direct access to the river because it's right on the Mississippi River. That would solve the problem of erosion and everything else that's connected with the bigger boats wanting to get to the Mississippi.
