WHY ARE the traffic laws that apply everywhere else are allowed to be completely ignored in the 300 block of North Frederick Street, specifically around the post office. Why are people allowed to park on the wrong side of the street, double park when not making deliveries, making U-turns at will and block driveways on the west side of the street? And why is the exit-only sign on the north side of the post office completely ignored by some people, blocking people who are obeying the law by going to wrong way? Why also can't a do-not-enter sign be placed at that location? I think it's time for the law to be enforced and people taught to respect the rights of others.. ...

Traffic at the post office

WHY ARE the traffic laws that apply everywhere else are allowed to be completely ignored in the 300 block of North Frederick Street, specifically around the post office. Why are people allowed to park on the wrong side of the street, double park when not making deliveries, making U-turns at will and block driveways on the west side of the street? And why is the exit-only sign on the north side of the post office completely ignored by some people, blocking people who are obeying the law by going to wrong way? Highway trees need water

ATTENTION HIGHWAY Department employees: Last year the state highway department planted trees at the intersection of Highway 61 and I-55. This year they're dying. They have to be watered during dry weather. Why waste money on trees if they're not taken care of? Another way of spending tax dollars.

Students bring liveliness

I JUST want to say I'm so glad all the students are back in town. It just makes the town more alive somehow. A lot of hustle and bustle, people on the streets and in the stores and restaurants. The parking lot at the residence halls looks so good because it's filled up. There's just more activity in general. Welcome back, students.

Use pills, not more money

BILL CLINTON is not safeguarding all the illegitimate children in this country by giving their mamas money. He is promoting more illegitimacy, just like Jimmy Carter did. I'd rather give those women birth control pills. I guess ignorance is bliss, but stupidity in the governing body is shameful.

The Richard Jewell lesson

LESSON LEARNED from the Richard Jewell case: Don't ever look at any conspicuous bags or try to do your job. Make sure that you turn the other eye and turn your back on everything and ignore everything in life and you'll never have any problems. That's the way the world's becoming. If you do your job, you might as well as just hang it up.

High cost of emphysema

DO YOU know that when you have emphysema from tobacco, you can't imagine what it cost you? You're on oxygen, and you are sick for years where you can't breathe. It's impossible for you to hold a job. And please tell me why President Clinton didn't put a stop on all of it. You talk about Medicare going broke. It is going to go broke if all these people who are smoking today are going to have emphysema. I've seen it with my own eyes. I know it to be the truth, that it will go broke, Medicare will. Because it's impossible for that money to go out and take care of the patient that has emphysema. I know, my husband died with it just recently.

Kindness after accident

I WAS involved in a motorcycle accident, and I regained consciousness with a young lady holding my head in her hands. I just wanted to thank her. I don't know who she is, but I wanted to thank her for her kindness and caring.

Time to change direction

THE DEMOCRATIC convention sure didn't get off to a very good start. Sarah Brady informed everybody that she and Jim took a wrong turn. That couldn't have been more true. This country's taken a wrong turn, and it's not too late to turn around. Let's send that carcass back to Arkansas in November and change things.

Watch out for lunatics

THANK YOU for Speak Out. It has certainly served as a warning to me as just how many illogical lunatics are running around. I hope someone warned Clinton about coming to visit a place where the term "political opposition" is putting it mildly. I don't think it would take much to push some of these over the edge. When I lived in Detroit, I tried to avoid crime. Now that I live in Southeast Missouri, I try to avoid the Republicans.

Spruce up empty storefronts

I WOULD think that the Downtown Merchants Association would be embarrassed by the unsightly condition of some the empty buildings on Main Street. Riverboat passengers and other tourists spend a lot of time walking downtown. I'm afraid those unattractive buildings do not speak well of our civic pride. Owners, how about sprucing them up with some attractive window coverings?

In favor of big government

I WATCHED half of the first four hours of the Democratic convention and in that time I saw three interviews. Two were teachers and one was a government employee for the Los Angeles County government. Is is any wonder with all these government workers in the Democratic Party favor big government? Isn't that just selfishness of the individuals showing through rather than their real concern about the children? At least Republicans are honest about what they believe. They don't need to hide behind this fake idea that everything they do is for the children when in fact these government employees are the greediest SOBs in this country.

Smoking and children

I WOULD certainly agree with the Speak Out caller who stated cigarettes could be harmful to children. Unfortunately, children usually have a rather uninformed, emotionally based basis for smoking rather than a rational, informed decision not to. When I was a youngster, my folks taught me to take one look at the skull and bones on a bottle of poison and not place the contents in my mouth. If children of today were taught to read the warning labels on cigarettes, they too should know better than to use them. However, it is usually the influence of the parents' smoking or an admired, usually older peer, family member or friend whom a youngster wants to imitate who may cause initial experimentation with tobacco. If you want to help with the problem, volunteer with the American Cancer Society or ASSIST or you PTA. I would certainly like to see restaurants who advertise their special children's meals on the Saturday morning cartoon show be free of smoke. There's a lot of smoke in some of those restaurants which have adjoining playgrounds and mostly advertise to children. The secondhand smoke can really upset a child's asthma and lungs and cause ear problems. I avoid, when possible, taking my children to restaurants where I see smoke or ashtrays.
