Glad to see Heidi's column every week

I AM really glad to Heidi Nieland's column come back weekly. You always get a good chuckle out of her column, and it makes you feel good. Unlike another reporter who seems to have an ax to grind and does it in a very subtle way.

It took a lot of stamina, but ...

A SPEAK Out caller recently told us Ronald Reagan was responsible for tearing down the Berlin Wall. No wonder the Gipper got worn out and sometimes had to take a lot of naps. You really have to admire someone who at that age has the physical strength to accomplish such a feat.

Greenspan gives out GOP malarkey

SAME OLD Republican misinformation. Alan Greenspan said on national television in 1996 that he has nothing to do with the economy and gave all credit to President Clinton. He stated he could not do it without President Clinton's budget in 1993 and its continuing sound policy. Do not forget that Alan Greenspan was in his position during Bush's failed administration.

Media ignores Grand Canyon in Jackson

APPARENTLY the Grand Canyon has been getting grander. According to a Speak Out caller it is now visible in Jackson. Why wasn't this more reported in the news? My family and I wasted a lot of money driving to Arizona to see it. To me this is just one more example of the news media not having its priorities in order.

Low or high turnout, you can't win

AN IRATE gentlemen named Hugh Hunter Byrd recently chastised the voters of Mississippi County. Byrd, who was hoping to stop demolition of the old Mississippi County courthouse, fumed when a small turnout of voters gave approval to a sale tax to finance construction of a new courthouse. "I spent months working on this thing, and if people are to lazy to vote, God help them," Byrd was quoted as saying. Though I have no opinion on this issue one way or the other, I feel sorry for Mississippi County. If there is a low voter turnout, the likes of Byrd go berserk. On the other hand, if there is a higher than expected turnout as in the recent race for state representative, allegations of fraud abound. Of course all this moaning and groaning could be understandable expressions of sour-grapes losers.

Thanks for returning billfold with money

I WOULD like to thank the wonderful employee of Wal-Mart who returned my billfold. Even the money was still there. Wal-Mart, keep up the good work.

Enjoys Tamara's column with coffee

CONGRATULATIONS, Tamara Zellars Buck. You are indeed an enlightenment with your staff writing. It's very good. I enjoy it with my cup of coffee on Saturday morning, I've got it made. Keep up the good work.

Wonders about taxes in Scott City

THERE ARE a lot of taxpayers in Scott City wondering why we pay such high taxes in this town. There are potholes, and there should be a stop sign on Park Lane because young children live through that area. We wonder why the streets can't be fixed. I'm under the impression we pay higher taxes than Cape Girardeau. Some places in town are fixed, but others are not. We just wonder why.
