One of life's lessons

I AM on-fire mad with all of you whiny parents harping about Ozzie Smith this and Ozzie Smith that. He's going to be here. You weren't robbed. Quit whining in Speak Out about it. You could have used this as positive lesson for your children. You could have said, "Hey, kids, sometimes life throws you a curve ball. You work hard for something, you pay for something, you expect to get it, but sometimes things just don't work out." I hope some of you parents out there actually took the time to explain to your children what actually happened. You know, a little dose of reality couldn't hurt these kids these days. You pay $65 to attend a baseball camp to see Ozzie Smith. Didn't you enjoy the camp? Weren't you there for baseball, or were you there to see Ozzie Smith? You're going to see him. He's going to be back. Chill out about it. Let me illustrate my point further. When Ozzie Smith was at the Show Me Center this spring, some complete moron and his nine-year-old son butted in line in front of us, screamed at my family with murder in his eyes, and I'm not exaggerating, "Don't you butt in front of my kid, my kid's here first. He's here to see Ozzie Smith." Yeah, the goodwill ambassador in baseball. Did any of you listen to the talk he gave about inspiration, patience and slow and steady wins the race? I guess you didn't.

$1,000 scholarships

I'M A 1997 high school graduate and recipient of a Cape Kiwanis Club scholarship. I want to thank the Kiwanis Club for its generosity and to correct the Southeast Missourian. Our scholarships were for $1,000 not $100 as it was printed in the June 17 newspaper.

Boycotts work

I WANT to comment about the Christian boycott of Disney. You know, the Democrats, or I mean the liberals, are saying this won't work and it's too hard to have a boycott. Well, what about when Jesse Jackson was wanting to boycott Texaco? It brought that company to its knees in a hurry. Boycotts work. When they fail to grow even one percent of what they project, it will bring Donald Eisner to his knees, and maybe Disney will quit this anti-Christian crusade. I, for one, won't watch the A&E, Discover or the Family Channel or go see any Disney movies or take my grandkids to Disneyland. If everybody would do it, we could stop Disney from attacking the Christian church.

New Smelterville?

CAPE HAS a new Smelterville area, south of new Highway 74. They try to fool the citizens of this area about new school buildings being built in triple-A condition when the streets and sidewalks are terrible with no city fixup or cleanup in sight. Shame on the City Council and the city as a whole.

Which school?

IF I were the people in the Clippard School District with a child entering kindergarten, I'd watch to see how many of the upper-income families will have to send their children to May Greene School.

They will find a way

I'D LIKE to comment on the letter that the guy wrote in about legalization of marijuana and some of the myths that have been spread about the drug. I can testify as a former user that marijuana has been misconcepted as causing memory loss and brain malfunctions or whatever they want to call it. But I did marijuana on a daily basis for over five years and then attended college and graduated with a 3.5 grade point average, which was in the top five percent of my class. I continually maintain employment and work at a highly skilled job. I don't use it anymore, but I just think that these kinds of misconceptions that add to the problems instead to the solution. And the fact is that as long as it is kept illegal, it is going to cause more and more people to be arrested and charged with minor crimes when they're not hurting anyone besides themselves and it keeps the court system tied up, therefore costing taxpayer money. We should have learned our lesson through prohibition. When it comes to something that the people want to do, they're going to do, and there's not anything you can do or laws you can pass that's going to stop them.

Boycott will succeed

I'M NOT a Baptist, but I support the Disney boycott, and I hope Baptists and I believe that many non-Baptists will support it. I believe many non-Baptist people will support it. I hope that Disney's very surprised. I was not aware that Disney was so anti-family and anti-Christian home in their activities. I had forgotten that they own NBC. Ellen's coming out is not the only garbage that they put out. I believe that the boycott will be a success.

Woodland Hills population

YOU'VE HAD several articles in reference to Kent Street in Woodland Hills in your newspaper, and your most recent one, in one place you referred to it as a 170-resident subdivision. There are, in fact, 170 homes here which is what you say in another part of the same article, and at one point there was 170 residents who signed a particular petition. I just wanted to point this out so that the city understands that there are more than 170 residents. There are 170 homes. I want to point it out also for the fact that the Southeast Missourian sure seems to be doing a lot of this and I'm hoping that you've got your numbers right.

Assessing blame

THIS IS about accusing the tobacco farmers. Now it has got to start. What we need to do is blame the Indian. He's the one who introduced tobacco to the white man. Let's start at square one.

The final authority

SHAME ON you for printing that one-sided article on the Southern Baptist Convention. The homosexual lifestyle and the ordaining of women as ministers is contrary to what the Bible says. If someone wants to base his beliefs on his own opinion or whatever happens to be politically correct that week, then he needs to start his own denomination. The Southern Baptists base their belief on the living word of God. God is the final authority on what is right and what is wrong.

Your responsibility

THE FEDERAL government is in your pocket because the average person chooses to be ignorant. So vote responsibly.

Government support

SO TIMOTHY McVeigh is entitled to be buried in a national cemetery or receive veteran's benefits. Well, he's getting the support of the taxpaying American people anyway. We are paying for his food, housing, clothing, doctors, dentists and his attorney. Now, ain't that a hoot? I plan, personally, to withhold my support from the American government because I feel that they are wasting my tax money in support of this idiot.
