WE ARE calling in reference to Russell Heights Cemetery. We are very angry that we purchased lots and now someone has decided to plant a tree near our lot. Through the years, we hate to think what our stones will look like. We feel we purchased these lots for the very reason that no trees were planted near or around our lots. We think Russell Heights needs to develop a policy and procedure and follow it regarding the planting of trees. Everyone owning lots involved should sign an agreement before a tree is allowed to be planted.
I THINK it's about time that the Bill Emerson bridge being renamed for what it really is. The approach to the bridge on the east side is being built high enough it will do nothing but retard the water moving through town. The people from the bridge on north are going to suffer unless something is done. If they wanted to do something correct, they would have built a pier causeway on the east end for several hundred feet to let the water go through when the river's at flood stage. What they're doing now is nothing but a water retention device.
WELL, HERE we go again. Another poor victim. Lt. Kelly Flinn's adultery, lying and disobeying orders is everyone else's fault but hers, according to her. How reassuring to know that it was nothing but "violations of the heart." Maybe she should have been given a promotion instead.
MY FAMILY was one in Jackson which allowed trash pickers to go through the trash and take out the items they could use during our cleanup week. We don't usually have a problem with that, but I do take issue with a few things said by the trash pickers in the recent Speak Out comment. First of all, many people did not leave our trash cleaner than they left it. We had a lot of cardboard boxes. Many times these were strewn about with the lids off and could have blown all over if I hadn't kept looking out the window every five minutes and straightening them. Fortunately, it rained that night and soaked everything down pretty well. If a scavenger sees a trash bag, whatever color it may be, and it's closed up with a twist tie on it, my advice would be, don't open it and go through it, don't put it in your truck and go away with it. This is most likely trash. If it isn't trash, there's personal, private items that we have deemed necessary to throw away such as college mementos that are private, and perhaps we don't have a shredder and perhaps we don't want to burn them. We would like to throw them out. And we feel like we have the right since it's our property until the trash men come and pick it up. It should be safe there rather than to have to watch like a hawk all day to prevent people from opening them up. The other thing I'd like to say is, we have reasons for throwing things away. The caller seemed to indicate we don't know how to recycle. That's isn't necessarily true. We have reasons. In our case, we have an unfinished basement, we are infested with brown recluse spiders, and we have a monthly extermination service. That means that pretty much everything we on the curb was probably covered with spider tracks and definitely sprayed and dusted with chemicals. This is trashy and not worth cleaning up to sell. It is better to throw things like that away.
I'M A disabled person and I was driving home at night and my car died and I can't walk too well. These two young men were coming from the Sigma Mu house, and I asked them if they could take me home because I can't walk. I want to thank those two men from Sigma Mu Fraternity for taking me home. It sure helped me out to call someone to help me get my car started, and I appreciate their random act of kindness.
I AGREE with the person who called in regarding Cape needing community theater. Community theater gives children outlets for creativity. They can build a production from the ground up and receive applause for their efforts. It keeps them off the streets during rehearsal and production periods, teaches them self confidence, construction techniques and teamwork. The current community theater receives no money for its time and effort. All they need is a place to do their productions to help bring the community in both as a team to make a production work and people to come an enjoy this production done by their community fellows. Please, help us find a spot for a theater for our community in this town.
