I KNOW that the opinion page is the province of the people that call and write in and not of the Republican-run newspaper, but I think you are showing your true colors when you print things like "Democrats can't be Christians" and "Everybody at Waco was wrong except for the participants, and because of it, I'm not going to teach my children or grandchildren to respect this country or salute the flag." I know these people's opinions are constitutionally protected, but what's the matter with you? Are you nuts for printing them? They're terribly inflammatory and awfully offensive. ...

Comments about Democrats are offensive

I KNOW that the opinion page is the province of the people that call and write in and not of the Republican-run newspaper, but I think you are showing your true colors when you print things like "Democrats can't be Christians" and "Everybody at Waco was wrong except for the participants, and because of it, I'm not going to teach my children or grandchildren to respect this country or salute the flag." I know these people's opinions are constitutionally protected, but what's the matter with you? Are you nuts for printing them? They're terribly inflammatory and awfully offensive. As Republicans, I know that you're often offended by what we Democrats say. But how is this going to help the situation by printing this kind of inflammatory clap-trap? It is illogical, not thought out, huge, grand, sweeping, vague generalizations that don't have anything to do with reality as we live in it. It's very offensive. You're getting a lot of money from Democrats through advertising and subscriptions, and I'd think twice about it before you keep printing all this crap. OK? It's terribly, terribly offensive. I'm very disappointed. There's a lot of intelligent comments that I'm sure go unprinted.

Bell employees get compliments

I WOULD just like to compliment the employees of Southwestern Bell on what an excellent job they do. Each time that I have called them about my bill or my grandmother's bill, they have never failed to help me, and they are always most pleasant about it. They are willing to take the time to explain things to me and to help me in any way possible. They are great employees, and I just wish I could shake each and everyone of their hands, but I guess I'll have to settle for Speak Out. Thanks, Southwestern Bell employees. You all are doing a great job.

Cars are problem, not sand trucks

IN REGARDS to the sand trucks in the 1400 block of North Main, I am a resident and live in the 1400 block of North Main. The sand trucks have never been a problem. The problem is the cars flying over the hill going down toward the stop sign. If they would watch their speed more, they wouldn't have to worry about braking on the sand.

Don't use baby carriages at craft fairs

I WOULD like to address my remarks to people in charge of area craft fairs and conferences and this sort of thing. I do wish that baby carriages and strollers could be prohibited from these affairs. I can't see that small children would have any interest in these meetings and craft fairs. The carriages take up lots of room, and it cannot be helpful for the children. They also can cause accidents. Last year, I personally fell over one of the carriages and hurt my back and arm. Luckily, nothing was broken and luckily the baby wasn't hurt. I know that St. Louis and St. Louis County prohibit carriages at their shows. I see no reason we couldn't. I think you're leaving yourself open for some lawsuits if somebody should get hurt in a case like this.

Use accelerator for green light

WHAT I want to know is why are there so many people in this town who ride their brakes through solid green traffic lights. They act like they're just hoping it will turn red. Everybody needs to get their foot off the brake and put on the gas when there's a green light.

Video reviews are appreciated

I WOULD just like to say that you've started putting in the video reviews. I really enjoy that, because it gives me an idea of what videos to check out for the weekend. And I also like the new format of your TV Today guide. I like it a lot. I like the part that you're putting in more what the shows are all about. So keep up the good work, guys.

Democrat, Christian and a liberal

IN RESPONSE to "We knew what we were getting" and the caller who says you cannot be a Christian and a Democrat: Some of these people in the Cape Girardeau area make me ashamed to say what I am. And what I am is a Christian, a Democrat and a liberal. And yes, you can be all three. Wasn't Thomas Jefferson, one of the founding fathers of our country also the founder of the Democratic Party? And wasn't he a Christian? But wait a minute, wasn't he also a slave owner? Hmm. What is a Christian? What is a Democrat? What is a liberal? I think that before the people of Cape Girardeau comment on any of the three, they ought to know what the heck they're talking about.

Try cheaper event for music festival

I READ recently where the music festival in downtown Cape Girardeau was poorly attended on the last evening. I spoke to several people, and they commented that they felt $10 per person was just too high. I realize the bands were very good, but $10 per person is a bit steep. Maybe they should lower the level of music in order to accommodate the pocketbooks of the fans, or they would have to advertise more as to what the caliber of bands are that they're getting. In any event, several people I spoke to had gone down there and then walked away when they realize it was $10 per person. They were with large groups, and it just wasn't worth it.

Perversion isn't normal lifestyle

I WANT to comment on the person who has responded to someone else commenting on the "Ellen" show being offensive. The person that I'm responding to says that homosexuality is not a choice and that it is something people are born with like the color of their hair or their eyes. I want to challenge that notion and say that's not true. When you consider any perverse behavior, you can apply the same piece of faulty reasoning and come up with the same result for someone who's an alcoholic. You can say the alcoholic is born an alcoholic and that's just what they are and there's no point in condemning that person for their alcoholism or expecting that person to change their behavior. Same could be said for a thief. Many of us could be tempted to steal something but we're not a thief until we actually steal it and just being tempted to do something wrong doesn't make me a thief or a liar or a pedophile. A person could say that God just made me a person that likes to have sex with little children. Do we apply that same acceptance to that way of life? This is not to say that we condemn the homosexual individual or the person who claims to be a homosexual as an individual and that we bash that person and we exclude them. I think we, as a society, have a right to expect them to not to force us to accept perversion as a normal lifestyle.

Letter writers: Know thyself

I WOULD hope that the ramblings, rhetorical, ruminating, regulars that post their thoughts in letters to the editor will take note of Paul Greenberg's column Sept. 27. Perhaps they might recognize themselves.
