We've become our worst fears
I DON'T believe we should go on with this impeachment process. There aren't enough votes or conscience in our government officials. The public doesn't want this by a 70 percent margin, so they deserve this no values-no morals character to fit the no values and character which the majority of our country has become.
Keep cats away from birds
I UNDERSTAND there is a leash law concerning cats as well as dogs, and if they become too obnoxious or pesky around your place, you can call the police and have them taken care of. I would like to warn some of the people that it's time to feed the birds, which I do all year, but especially in the winter. You cannot feed the birds and have some neighbor's cat lying under the bird feeder. And this is a promise: If you do not keep your cats in the house, contained in the yard, away from the birds and the feeders, they will disappear. There is a law that covers this. Please check it out. I love to feed the birds, and they need it. We're encouraged to do it during the winter months when they cannot find food. How can we feed birds when the cats are there feeding on the birds? I do not have anything against cats. I like cats, although I do not have one because I prefer to feed birds. But please keep your cat in your house or your yard as you would a dog as required by law.
Governing by polls
LOOK AT the polls. Look at the polls. The American people want this, the American people want this. Well, the American people if polled don't want affirmative action, but it's the law. The American people if polled don't want abortion, but it's the law. We're governed by laws, not polls and if they want it to be different, just throw away the Constitution. We don't need it. Just poll us.
Selling out to China
I DON'T know who the person or persons were that sold our country down the river to the Chinese. Not only do they show on TV full containers of imports coming to the U.S., these shipping containers are going back empty. Someone has sold our country to the Chinese. I'm not calling names. Another way you can tell is go in the stores and pick up any item you see, and 99 times out of 100 it will be made in China.
Absurd attendance policy
REGARDING THE attendance policy at Central High School, our child was referred to a specialist in St. Louis. Of course, these doctors at Children's Hospital or other doctors normally do not have evening and weekend appointments. Our child begged us not to go the doctor and keep the appointment. We did keep the appointment, and now our child does have to take finals due to being absent that day. By the way, now our child has the attitude that it doesn't matter to miss one day or 10 days. You have to take the finals no matter what. So this definitely can backfire on the administration. This is the most absurd policy that I have ever heard of.
We need an interim president
CLINTON should be replaced by an interim president, Vice President Gore, until this whole matter is resolved. He should not be allowed to conduct the nation's business, domestic or foreign, while this impeachment proceedings against him are under way. It's too dangerous to contemplate when a man hasn't the decency to resign after what he's done. There's no telling what he may do. Clinton is a disgrace to our nation.
Impeach our representative
I WAS always taught in school and in college that our representatives and senators in Washington were elected by the voters to do what we say. Well, I have found out that is not the case. They get suggestions from thousands of voters in their area. They don't listen to the voters. They do what they please. So I think we ought to impeach Jo Ann Emerson.
Careless and reckless
BILL CLINTON said himself when Hillary was writing the articles of impeachment for Richard Nixon that no president should be careless or reckless in his behavior. And Bill Clinton has done a lot more than that. He also lied under oath. He prevented Paula Jones from having her day in court. All of these are facts. It's a shame we have to go through an impeachment, but there is no alternative, according to the Constitution. I say impeach that sucker.
Something to fear
I READ the caustic comments of Cal Thomas, the controversial columns of Peter Kinder and the ideological rhetoric of Gary Rust. After doing so, I am often reminded of FDR's famous quote, "The only thing we have to fear is the Southeast Missourian."

Happy holidays to purse snatchers
THIS PROBABLY is not a news subject, but it's something you might want to keep in mind in this fine Christmas season that we have adorning us. I'd just like to wish a very merry Christmas to the individual who stole my daughter's purse and collected the $100 cash that she had left out of her paycheck after paying her car payment.
Talking is better than ...
CONCERNING THE letter about driving down Kingshighway and talking to yourself. I'd rather follow someone talking to himself than follow someone who is talking on a cell phone, flicking his cigarette out the window or juggling his coffee and breakfast.
The Limbaugh connection
WHILE ATTENDING the NASCAR races in Atlanta recently, on three occasions we were asked where we were from. We said Cape Girardeau, and they responded, Oh, the home of Rush Limbaugh. I'm happy to know Rush and his family and to have a hometown boy make our city known.
Honest Democrats: Step forward
IT'S TIME for honest Democrats to step forward. I know they're in a tight spot with their leadership trying to lobby them to vote against impeachment. I know they don't want to go against their president. But it's time for honest Democrats to step forward and say the truth will come out. We all know that perjury was committed. Perjury is a felony. It is time to vote for impeachment. God bless the honest Democrats.
Setting Gore straight
I WANT to comment on our brilliant vice president, Al Gore. You know he got lost in the woods one time right after he got elected vice president and didn't know where he was. Then he went into an office up there in Washington and didn't know who the statues of Jefferson and Washington were. He had to be told who they were. Now he's claiming if they impeach Clinton that this will remove him from office. How stupid is this guy? Impeachment only says that he needs to be tried by the Senate. It doesn't take him out of office.
Bad apple spoils the rest
I GO along with a few of the party in the House who have shown character. I'm a Democrat, but how my friends can support this president is disturbing. If this were a Republican, you would be irate with his behavior. He should resign and let the vice president take over. If you have a bad apple, it will spoil the rest. He's not indispensable. Being a Christian, I can't with conscience support the acts of this president. I would hope my friends would ask themselves would they want their children to accept this. I can forgive him, but he should step down and let us restore dignity to our party and America.
Advice needs of digging dogs
I DON'T like to complain but I'm having trouble with dogs coming in my yard and digging holes. What do you do in a case like this? I'm just curious. I don't like holes dug in my yard.
Not following constituents
THIS IS for our U.S. representative, Jo Ann Emerson. I believe that the area that you represent, Mrs. Emerson, is voting 2-1 against impeachment, but you're not taking our representation to Congress. You're doing what you want to do.
Where's the outrage?
IF THE president would have done in Missouri what he did in the Oval Office, he would have been charged with sodomy. Isn't it great to have a president with such a character? You can be proud of the economy and keep in office as a real role model for your children. But even the decent Democrats should be outraged by this moral tragedy.
