Don't forget Mother Teresa

I WOULD like to know, with all this hype about the anniversary of Princess Di's death, I hope there's going to be a lot of news reports about Mother Teresa's death, which will be a year soon. Do you think there will be something on that? I doubt it.

Some lawyers are an embarrassment

THE WAY some lawyers advertise today, I am reminded of a statement made over 30 years ago by a judge in mid-Missouri. He said, and I quote, "Unfortunately, there are too many people in our profession who are nothing more than legal prostitutes and vultures on the misfortune of people." Fortunately, I believe only a few lawyers fit in this group, but I'm sure they are an embarrassment to the majority in the legal profession.

Meth ingredients are disgusting

I JUST wanted to call and commend the newspaper on the articles on methamphetamines and the methamphetamine problems. I know that some people in the newspaper took a lot of flak for publishing the ingredients that are in meth. But if even one person reads those ingredients and decides not to try meth because they think that its disgusting to put those chemicals in their body, then that person is much better off because of the Missourian.

What distractions are next?

WHAT ACT will the president use to vent his anger for his own problem on Congress when it reconvenes. Will he shut down the government? Veto everything? What's next? What distractions will he use? He will be out for vengeance because he's angry and arrogant for being caught and treed. He should resign for the country's welfare. He won't be looking for results. He'll be looking for a fight with Congress to show his authority. As a lame and disgraced leader of the Democratic Party, what Democratic campaigner will have a chance if truth prevails? Our servicemen's morale is very low. They have no commander-in-chief.

Teach American history

I DO not understand how there can be any justification or rationale for teaching African history in our elementary or secondary school instead of or in addition to U.S. history. Our history is the history of the United States of America. Our history is not the history of Germany, of Italy, of France or of Africa.

Lower speed limit in Fruitland

THIS IS not a news commentary, but I noticed they raised the speed limit in Fruitland up to 55 mph. I think that's great. Now I can sit on my front porch and watch all the highway patrol and all the ambulances and everything else speeding to accidents. In my opinion, they should have lowered it to 40 mph and cut the accidents. We have enough accidents the way it is at 45 mph, but now they raised it up to 55 mph. That just gives people more of an excuse to drive 60 mph then.

If they can do it, so can I

IF HILLARY and Chelsea can stand it, I can too. Let's move on.

Using rumors and innuendoes

IT IS indeed a sad day in the United States of America. The defenders of our president cannot defend him on the basis of his record of honesty, integrity and morality. Their only defense is to destroy through rumors, innuendoes and outright lies the reputations of former presidents, members of Congress and citizens who question the actions of the president. In regard to Gen. Eisenhower, I have been looking for years for documented evidence of an affair between him and Kay Sommersby. I would appreciate the source of the caller's facts about Eisenhower's having an adulterous affair. Also, which former presidents are known to have lied under oath?

Against phonies and liars

I AM not a phony or a liar. I don't like phonies and liars. That's why I haven't voted the Republican ticket since Richard Nixon.

Meth destroys more than the user

THIS PAST week you published articles about meth. You talked with people who were addicted to it and how it has changed their lives and ruined them. I am glad that these stories were told, because this is such a big problem in Missouri. I know from firsthand experience, because my ex-husband was on it. I would just like to say it ruins the family's lives also. It destroys them to see a husband be so addicted to a drug that he chooses that drug over his wife, child and grandson. We have been hurt more than anyone can know. It makes our lives a living hell. We begged, cried, everything possible we knew how to make him stop. Nothing worked. We could see it getting worse every day, but you get to a point that you realize that no matter what you say or do to that person, he is going to do that drug anyway. And finally, you start to give up. We lost a husband, father and grandfather to meth. It has taken our family life and destroyed it. I loved this man for over 26 years. We were high school sweethearts. He was a good person before he got introduced to meth, but he mentally destroyed my and my daughter's lives. We no longer have the happy family life we once had. It will never be the same for us. It's a shame that such a evil drug can take over a person's life like that. It's hard for us to understand why he chose drugs and drug friends over us. The memories of the all good times that we had together are still there, but the memories of all the begging, pleading and crying are there also. I can never hate for what he did to us, but he hurt us deeply. After he got arrested and went to jail and the recovery center, I prayed that he would stay off this evil drug for the sake of himself and his daughter and grandson. Our marriage is over. It will never be the same. I will go on with my life, and he will go on with his, but it hurts. I sometimes wish memories could be erased so they won't hurt so bad, but they can't. I must deal with it the best I can. Meth destroys more than the user's life. It destroys the family's also.

Street sign loses a letter

I'M VERY glad to see that somebody took green paint on a brush and painted over the s on the sign that tells us what street we're on down at Kingshighway. And, I'm sure that William Lewis of the Lewis and Clark expedition would like that too.

Quit putting guilt on parents

SOMEONE WAS recently quoted concerning succumbing to the temptation to take meth as saying, "It's solely the parents who make a difference." Horsefeathers! Modern science is teaching us that our genes over which we have no control play a very important role in predisposing people to engage in irresponsible behavior. And when it comes to the environment, whether we like to hear it or not, peer groups have a lot more influence than parents. Quit putting parents on a guilt trip.

Comparing working conditions

I AM speaking to the union guy who had the letter in the paper. I worked at a union place for 20 years. When the place closed, I was making $5 an hour, and the insurance was not that great. Now I'm working for a non-union place here in Cape Girardeau. I have great insurance, great wages, and the working conditions are a lot better than when I was at the union. So not all union places are the best places to work.

One way to ruin a vacation

STATE SEN. Peter Kinder recently waxed indignant over the fact that no Clinton staffers had, as yet, resigned. This is a question that I have been pondering as well. I ultimately concluded that some of them soon will. I believe the reason they held off was because they wanted to outrage Sen. Kinder and ruin his vacation.

It takes time

THE DEMOCRATS, Clintonites, Clinton's cohorts and Clinton's advisers complain that it has taken four years to investigate Bill Clinton's activities. They forget how many years it took to catch Jesse James, Jimmy Hoffa, Al Capone and numerous other lawbreakers.

Let me tell you about Democrats

I DON'T know where it got started that the Democrats were a compassionate people. I know a lot of yellow-dog Democrats, and I mean a lot of them. And I don't know a one of them who isn't just out for himself and himself only. Don't let people fool you into thinking the Democrats are going to help you. They help themselves, and that's it. They're money-hungry and power-hungry. I'm 87 years old, and I've been watching them a long time. I've come over to the U.S. Taxpayer's Party, a party of loyalty and sincerity. We're against homosexuality. We're against all forms of evil and sin, which the Democrats are all a part of.

Park complex needs maintenance

I WOULD like to say something about the Shawnee Park complex. The fields aren't being watered and very well taken care of. The city spent all of that money to provide new fields. They should at least keep up the maintenance on them. In the bleachers there is trash and debris all around. I think we need to keep our parks beautiful for Cape Girardeau and hold up to that.

Sending notes home from school

I WISH you would please address this in the paper for me. The school systems need to use a different title when they send the kids home with paper saying "your parents need to sign this" or "show this to your parents" or "your parents need to do that." A lot of the children are being raised with grandparents or significant others. It really hurts these kids because everything they get says "your parents." They need to address that in a different way besides "your parents."

University doesn't need seminary

I JUST wanted to comment. Isn't it interesting that the university wants to turn the seminary into buildings and stuff for the school that they don't need, yet they are looking to the state to milk it for $78 million in the 2000 budget. If they can't survive on their own budget, then where do they get off thinking they can afford something that they don't need, especially since we're going to have to pay for it -- the people of the town -- and we won't even get the claim on it?

Bad news ... and good news

I'VE GOT good news and bad news for the Speak Out readers this morning. The bad news is that the way things are going, once SEMO fields a winning football team they'll probably ask the taxpayers to build them a new stadium. The good news is that once SEMO fields a winning football team, they'll ask the taxpayers to build them a new stadium.

President is like the publican

ALL I'VE got to say is that what Bill Clinton did is between him and his God and his family. These conservative, extreme right-wing Republicans keep giving him abuse saying he is a liar over and over again. He's certainly a better Christian than I would be, because I think I'd forget I was president. I think my fist would be in a lot of their mouths. This man does not deserve this abuse. He's still the president of the United States. He's doing his job. He didn't lie on any national defense program. He did not owe us anything. It was his wife he owed an explanation to. All I've got to say is shame on these extreme right-wingers. I think he certainly showed more of a Christian attitude than they did. He reminds me of the publican who said, "Lord, I've sinned." Let's respect him. He's still our president. Let's make this country great. He's doing a wonderful job.

Thanks for retrieving hubcap

I WANT to thank the man in the red car on Bloomfield Road who saw one of my hubcaps come off. He followed me, and when I stopped he let me know about it and even went back with me and went down an incline and picked it up and gave it to me. I want to let him know that I appreciate it very much. It was certainly a kind deed. Cape Girardeau is full of people who do kind deeds. I'm 84, and I couldn't have done that by myself.

Monica wanted the attention

IF MONICA Lewinsky wasn't a self-indulgent person who wanted the world to know of her conquests, no one would have know about her affair with the president. So why does she not receive flak? Where were her morals when she consented, and where was her concern for the country when she blabbed her conquests?

Jackson PO has spruced up

HAVE YOU noticed how nice it looks around our post office in Jackson? New shrubs have been planted, and the other shrubs have been trimmed and shaped up. It really looks attractive. Many thanks to the persons responsible for the big improvement. Let's keep Jackson the beautiful city it is. I'm proud to be a resident here.

The rose was nice touch

I'D LIKE to express my thanks to Knaup Floral Co. and the senior nutrition center for the lovely rose I received on Good Neighbor Day when they brought my lunch from the nutrition center. That was truly thoughtful, and it made my day.

Where are ministers' morals?

WHERE ARE the ministers' voices of outrage at this Clinton fiasco? They are nowhere to be seen or heard in all of the media. Have they all left the planet Earth? Have we no supporters for the moral of our country?

We've forgotten how to drive

I AM afraid that when the city of Cape Girardeau removes the detour signs and barricades, there will be a rash of wrecks. Attempting to drive correctly could be disastrous. After all, we've gotten so used to driving like you drive dodge cars at the fair.

Really big money

A SPEAK Out caller made a wrong assumption recently when he said Senator Bond must be backed by millionaires. According to my information, most of his backing comes from zillionaires.
