SPEAKING OF Random Acts of Kindness, I would like to thank the lady who ran me down in the aisle at Kmart to tell me I had left my purse in the rest room. I really did appreciate that.
I WOULD like to thank the music department of Jackson High School for a wonderful pops concert. We had out-of-town guests, and they were really impressed with the talent at the school. Mrs. Schwein does an outstanding job training her students and putting all the hard work into the concert. Again, thank you, and we can't wait until next year's program.
WOULD SOMEONE please tell why when people mow the yard, they aim the mower's grass discharge chute toward the street so that all the grass blows into the street and they don't bother to pick it up?
OUR CITY officials just don't get it. We don't want our tax money -- city, state or federal -- operating a restaurant at the airport. If the airport and its restaurant were such a good deal, private industry would jump on it.
I WANT to comment on the quandary that the Clinton Administration finds itself over India exploding these nuclear weapons. You know, it's funny. We're telling them they shouldn't develop nuclear bombs. We gave information to the Chinese that allowed them a delivery system and secrets about the nuclear weapons to help them build up their secrets. Now we're telling their next-door neighbor, which is afraid of China and has had a war with them, that we're not going to stand for them having weapons. This is stupid. If the Indians really want to have some power and influence, they ought to give Clinton some campaign contributions like the Chinese. The Chinese really got their money's worth out of giving him those hundreds of thousands of dollars.
I DON'T think Kinder is a captive of the tobacco industry, but I do think the Congress is unjustly going after the tobacco industry because they say the tobacco industry has done sneaky things to the public. Well, the tobacco industry is not the only industry in the United States that does sneaky things to the public. The insurance companies do, the food companies do. Every company is driven by greed. Thank God, it is a free society. But Congress is wrong in going after the tobacco industry and saying that people aren't responsible for their own actions. Congress is going after the tobacco industry unjustly. This is just McCarthyism at its best.
I WANT to thank Alma Schrader School for the pretty flowers the students gave to the neighbors in that area last week. I am alone, and when I got home from the senior center, I found the flowers and it made my day. It was beautiful.
I WANT to comment about the U.N., how we're putting money in there and why our Social Security and Medicare are in trouble. It's mighty funny to me. The reason they need money all the time is they're like the federal government. They're overpaying the people who work for them. And Clinton, of course, is an internationalist. He has disarmed the Army and now that we've got to go do international duty, he wants to turn everything over to the U.N. and he wants to pay them what they say we owe them. I don't think we owe them anything. If we've got all this money, let's give it to Social Security and Medicare.
JUST WHEN I thought socialism was dead, I read where the city government of Cape Girardeau may take over the airport restaurant. Citizens, we must resist this power grab. If they get away with it, what will be next? Frankly, I feel the day may not be far off when power-hungry city officials use strong-arm tactics to also take control of the sole repository of truth and freedom in Cape and the surrounding area, our own Southeast Missourian.
LET'S HAVE sense enough to give credit where credit is due. Congress should be given credit for the good economy, for the lack of unemployment, for a wage increase to the working, for everything else except just out-and-out going into war without even being notified. Congress should get credit for everything. The president of the United States does absolutely nothing but suggest to Congress, and he's got sense enough to know that whatever the majority in Congress is, that whatever he suggests to them is going to pass if they will just go along with the majority of Congress. And that's all Bill Clinton has done. He gone along with what he knows Congress wants. That's why this country says we're in great shape because of Bill Clinton. Bill Clinton has done absolutely nothing but disgrace this country.
