MEMBERS OF Congress, the federal government, all politicians have used and abused the word "minority." There is no such thing in this country. It is and always has been the individual. No minorities, just individuals

MEMBERS OF Congress, the federal government, all politicians have used and abused the word "minority." There is no such thing in this country. It is and always has been the individual. There is no such thing as a minority group in my view. It simply depends upon the person, the individual. The politicians use that for their own self-gain. So does the federal government.

All those left-wing ideas

I WOULD like to remind the caller who was so quick to judge us "left-wing extremists" that all the things he enjoys and takes for granted began as a left-wing idea. I will name just a few. To begin with, the American revolution was called an extremist idea. The 40-hour work week, paid vacation, job security, Social Security, all of these things, were at one time considered left-wing, extremist ideas. Were I he, I think I would go back to my history book before I began blowing off my bazzoo.

Need school board's support too

WHEN BOND issues comes up for the Jackson School District to build new buildings, they want the taxpayers to support them. But whenever the taxpayers need the board to support them on such issues as busing to day care which would cost less than $8,000 a year according to their research, they cannot support the taxpayers. I believe the taxpayers are willing to pay the $8,000 a year, but they want us to support bonds at several million dollars which we do. Do you see a problem? I do.

No support for personal patrol cars

I SUPPORT the police department and fire department 100 percent, but I cannot support the fact that the chief of police wants to put patrol officers in their own cars. I do not believe that we need every patrol officer to have a personal car to take home. They cannot use it for personal reasons. To and from work, to me, is personal.

Liberals change the rules

I SAW where Donn Miller wrote another letter to the editor. This time, he's not happy with the Chicago Cubs walking Mark McGwire. Well, most conservatives would say that's part of the game. But of course, him being a liberal, he would try to pass a law or change a rule just so it would suit him. In other words, a liberal doesn't like to leave something alone. If something goes wrong, they're ready to change the rules which have existed for a long time. I think leave it alone. That's the game, that's the way it has been for a long time.

Society demands safeguards

LIBERTARIAN MARY Nall recently asked if someone would explain why we have government control of medicine purchases, health care. Mary's tirade is based on a false premise. We don't have government control of any of these things. In general, we have sensible government regulations but not control. It's called a mixed economy. Evidently she would be happy in a totally free market based on a principle of let the buyer beware and including legalization of crack cocaine. Society isn't happy with that. We want rules, regulations and safeguards. By the way, where does the Libertarian Party stand on abortion?

Clean up other areas too

WHILE, THE city is preparing to maybe tear down the old St. Francis Hospital and the Marquette Hotel, I would like to remind them that when they send the wrecking crews up in the north end of town in the flood area to tear down these remaining flood houses, I would like for them to take a look at the old flooded-out service station in the 900 block of North Main Street and do something about it. There's also an old shack in the 1100 block of North Spanish Street in the rear that's been sitting like this for years. The chimney is about to fall over on its roof. Let the city take care of these too while they're trying to clean up Cape, because the people who are left up here want our neighborhood to look nice too. How can we do that if the city won't enforce its ordinances?

Stick to other topics

DONN MILLER of Tamms recently penned a piece advocating changes in baseball's rules. After reading it, I concluded, Miller would be better served to confine his letters to advocacy of socialism and atheism.
