I WISH they would get the animal control on Westwood. I've never so many dogs and cats running around. My kids were walking down to the park. This gray and white dog came running down the driveway after my kids. They were scared to death. This big German shepherd also goes after you. It really is mean. It is running day and night. I hope they do something with all these dogs and cats running wild. The lawns are just one mess with dog dirt everywhere.
WHILE DRIVING around Cape Girardeau and vicinity, my wife and I and some friends were looking at all the new construction including streets and buildings. There is going to be plenty flooding south of Cape Girardeau with all this water being run off into the river. There will be flooding in Commerce more than ever.
I NOTICED that Scott City was having a problem with its recycling program. I had a conversation with a Swedish exchange student, and she said that in Europe it's the law for people to recycle. I want to congratulate everybody on Kurre Lane, because everybody on that street recycles every week. I think Cape Girardeau County needs to have an official recycling drop-off center. Bloomington, Ind., has a wonderful county drop-off center where they recycle everything. It's very clean and paved, and there are instructions there. Disabled people work there, and they assist everyone who comes. There's even an indoor room where people can drop off things that teachers can use. It's a fabulous program. Cape Girardeau County needs to get with it.
I'M A parent of a child in kindergarten at Nell Holcomb School. I would like to thank Sue Wilson and the Southwestern Bell Telephone Pioneers for the personalized books that were given to each kindergarten student. The book is personalized with each child's name plus two of their best friends' names. My daughter absolutely loves her book.
I WANT to express my agreement with the comments about the religious pressure that the leaders of the Catholic hospital seem to be emphasizing in the talks between the two hospitals. I certainly agree that the elimination of the women's services at Southeast Missouri Hospital because of religious pressures would be absolutely ridiculous. And in the editorial comment about ethical standards of the Catholic hospital being respected in the secular setting, why isn't there some mention of the ideals of the secular hospital being respected by the Catholic hierarchy?
I BELIEVE that the contemplated law of giving $1,000 to young people getting married wins the idiocy award for this year. I'm very much against that law, and I hope that all of you are too.
JEFFERSON School held a very nice Health Fair. The lady in charge did an excellent job of organization. There were health-care people from all areas. There were dentists, orthodontists, eye doctors, ambulance, community services. The only thing that wasn't there at the Health Fair was the Jefferson School parents and children. It was very disappointing and embarrassing as a parent of a Jefferson School child to see that only 12 families or fewer showed up. The teachers showed up, but not parents or families. I think Jefferson School owes a big apology to the lady who was in charge.
I'M CALLING to thank the Missourian and Jeffrey Jackson for an honest and well-written review of Cape Central High School's musical "Guys and Dolls." I think it's important for us to have someone attend these performances who won't always sugarcoat what they write. After seeing the production, I agree with most everything Mr. Jackson had in his review. I thought it was a good production, not the best I've ever seen at the high school. And again, I want to thank Mr. Jackson for his writing.
I'M SO happy to read Kathleen Parker's commentary. It's so wonderful, and I wish all women would read it. It's so necessary and so applicable to our day. God bless her and all mothers who take this to heart for it's really a gut-wrenching story, and women should all read it.
THIS IS in regards to the comment that teachers don't need a raise. Teachers get an education. They pay for their education, or their parents pay for their education. They spend several years going to college to become a teacher. I am not a teacher. I'm a mother. I am thankful for these teachers. The majority of the teachers in the area are wonderful teachers. They give our children a good education. They are angels, most of them. Our children are in their care the largest part of the day. I'm very thankful of what they do. They deserve a raise. I realize that right now the Cape district's having a rough time. But the bottom line is the teachers do need a raise, maybe not this year, maybe next year. If they're going to accept this, I think the parents of the children that we send there need to be thankful. I especially thankful to the Jackson School District and the Nell Holcomb School District.
I HAVE something to say about teachers not getting a raise. My mom is a teacher for a public school, and she works long, hard hours. When she comes home from school, she grades papers. She deserves a raise.
THIS IS another call about the proposed changes in Cape's animal-control ordinance, particularly the part about cats. I understand that a lot of people aren't too responsible and don't have their cats neutered, but it is just going too far for the city to tell you how many animals you can have and to charge more for the cats than they do for the dog licenses and to tell you they have to be neutered. Next thing you know they're going to be telling you how many times you can flush your toilet. And then they wonder why so many people are moving out of Cape and why so many new ones that are moving in are turning around and moving to Jackson or someplace else because Cape is utterly ridiculous on all these petty rules and regulations. And how many attack cats have you ever seen? Dogs run loose in my neighborhood all the time, and the dog catchers can't do anything.
I CANNOT resist responding to the recent Speak Out caller who accused public school teachers of watching videos all day long and being highly overpaid. Before you judge us, come walk a mile in our shoes, spend some time in the public schools observing, then make your judgments. Come to our homes in the evening and see how much time we spend with our families and how much time we spend on school work. Obviously the caller is ignorant about the amount of planning time and prep time that goes into every school day as well as the hours spent at home grading papers. Ask any teacher. By the time you total our hours worked both in and out of the classroom, we work for less than minimum wage. I've worked for 20 years in the public sector, and believe me this is the hardest job I've ever done.
I HOPE Jackson seriously considers donating Brookside VFW Park for the veterans cemetery. I had just remarked last year what a beautiful veterans cemetery that would make. I seriously hope they will consider that.
THE OVAL office is not the unemployment office. What makes Kathleen Willey think she should be able to get a job there? And friends don't cut friends' throats. Were her shoestrings tied together so she couldn't leave if she felt threatened? Kathleen Willey, go to the unemployment office for a job like the rest of the people do.
I'VE BEEN reading with great interest all the talk about tougher DWI laws in the paper. If they want everybody to stop drinking and going out and having a little fun, then stop selling it. I'm against people drinking and driving. That's a bad thing. A lot of people get killed. But I think the people are carrying it just a little bit far.
CONGRESSWOMAN EMERSON said the president ought to tell the truth. Well, as far as politicians go, you would be hard-pressed to get any politician to tell the truth whether they're Democrat or Republican.
A SUPER year at Jackson, both football and basketball. Congratulations to the Lady Indians and Coach Ron Cook and Assistant Coach Sam Sides and others in the Jackson area schools with special congratulations to Christa Millham and Dana Eakins. You will be long remembered in Jackson and surrounding Missouri girls basketball. The Lady Indians played a very challenging schedule with only two returning starters. Plus all strong southeast Missouri teams, they also beat all the best teams in St. Louis area. You may have finished state as No. 2, but to an old Jackson alumni living in the St. Louis County area you are No. 1.
WAY TO go University of Missouri and St. Francis Medical Center's Dr. Steve Jordan. It's about time somebody addressed the issue of adults with ADD/ADHD. I hope Cape Girardeau knows how lucky they are to have someone the caliber of Dr. Jordan.
THIS IS in regards to the letter to the editor, "VA medical care is lacking," by Harold Reed of Leopold. I agree with him. The VA medical care is certainly lacking when I have to drive 150 miles round trip just to go down to see the VA, and sometimes the doctor's not even in that day. This should certainly be addressed by our federal legislators. It's a disgrace to our nation to have fought in a war which they promised to give you the best medical care possible, and now they are reneging on their promise.
