Congratulations to City Council

A GREAT big congratulations to the City Council. At its meeting, the councilmen all agreed, from the looks of them and their actions, that they're going to do something about old St. Francis Hospital. I hope they build a police station over there and it lifts that end of town up. The City Council is 100 percent behind it, from their actions.

Tax hamsters and parakeets next?

I CAN'T believe that our city staff has enough time on its hands to write an ordinance like the one proposed on this dog and cat tax. I can't believe the City Council wants something like this put on the ballot. This is the most ridiculous thing that I have ever heard. Are hamsters and parakeets be next on the tax list?

No government reports on DARE program

I WOULD like to make a comment about the DARE program. I think a lot of people would be interested to know that it's a $600 million a year program that makes educators, cops and politicians feel like they are doing their part on the war on drugs. The problem with the DARE program is that it doesn't work. At least a dozen independent studies have shown kids who go through the 17-week program are just as likely to use drugs as those who don't. But what's more disturbing is that the crusaders of this program are criticized when there are no government reports. They want to bring out government reports to find out if the program works, but they're not doing it. Why isn't the government releasing the reports to find out if the program is working or not?

Where are the signs this time?

I WOULD like to make a comment. I remember when George Bush was in office and he went over and bombed Saddam Hussein, people put up signs, "No blood for oil." Well, where are the signs this time, "No blood for the cover-up of the sex scandal?"

Nice improvements at Humane Society

I WAS out at the Humane Society and wanted to say how wonderful it looked. They have really done a lot of nice things out there, and I understand that all of the paint and supplies and linoleum and extra furnishings and things were all donated. I just think it's wonderful the way our community can support not-for-profit organizations. We are very, very generous community. By the way, they have lots of puppies. So if you can provide a home for one or if you could take some puppy food out, they'd really appreciate it.

Senior citizens were discourteous

ON WEDNESDAY evening, Feb. 18, several groups of senior citizens representing different organizations or retirement facilities were invited for a free dinner and entertainment at Cape Central High School. National Honor Society, Cape Community Youth Choir, Thespians and the Madrigal Group performed. The spaghetti, the tossed salad and the cake and pie and ice cream were graciously served by the young people. When the program began, many of the senior citizens continued to talk and visit loudly, ignoring the program and spoiling it for others. What an act of discourtesy.

Clinton's war talk is saving face

WHO IS a more despicable human being, Saddam Hussein for using women and children as shields, or Bill Clinton for possibly sending men and women to Iraq to die in a war that would serve only to save him from another scandal? It's time we stop laughing at all the Bill and Monica jokes and take seriously the length our president is willing to go to save face. Don't attempt to make the argument that Saddam isn't complying with U.N. inspections or sanctions. This isn't something new. It's been going on almost since the last shots were fired in the Gulf War. Why attack now, Mr. Clinton? Stand up and face your problems like a man. We are not wagging the dog. We're sacrificing young soldiers' lives, and that is not a joke I find amusing.

Nell Holcomb story is appreciated

JUST WANTED to say I really enjoyed the article on Nell Holcomb School that was on the front page of your newspaper. I must say that school sounds like a very good school to receive top honors for its accreditation, especially to be the first in Southeast Missouri to do that. I thought it was really a well-written article and great to see such active reporting. Continue to keep up the good work, Southeast Missourian.

Advice for small-minded caller

THIS IS in response to the small-minded person who called in Speak Out with the comment entitled "Woman not at the same competitive level." Do us all a favor and just drive yourself off the end of a bridge?

Lots of support for women's athletics

THIS IS in reference to person who called into Speak Out on women's athletics. Did this caller happen to check out the Olympic hockey game scores? And maybe he should check out the facts before you speak. I'm assuming this comment was made by a man. Women athletics at the university have statistics that are very high. The success speaks for itself. Women athletics, in particular women's basketball, is an interesting and competitive sports to view. I feel that Coach Arnzen is probably one of the highest caliber of coaches in probably the history of Missouri basketball. I question the attendance statistics at the university for the game. Coach Arnzen and the athletes have a high level of fan support, and I wouldn't be surprised if you hear from several of them.

Look at the Olympic medal count

TO THE person who referred to female athletes as being inferior, I would suggest you count the Olympic medals won by the U.S. men and then the Olympic medals won by the U.S. women, and then please tell me who is inferior.

Don't put RV park in Red Star area

SO THE tourism board and the city are planning on putting recreational vehicles in the flooded out area of Red Star. These vehicles are nothing more than mobile homes on wheels. As a property owner, I will not stand by and let them pile a bunch of trailers up in this end of town. If they want to do anything, put them down where the old sand company used to be. Our property in this end of town has hit bottom on prices. People who have kept their homes up nice and worked hard cannot sell their homes for the value of them. Seems to me like all the city and tourism board are interested in is bringing people into this city to help the merchants out. If this comes up, it will be fought the best way we know how to fight it. There are a few people in this end of town who still value their property and don't want anything else put in here to degrade it and devalue it.

Read to find out good information

I WOULD like to suggest that people start reading. First read what Walter Williams reported on the environmental agenda on the Opinion page of Southeast Missourian Feb. 19. Then if they want to challenge the figures, look them up for themselves. Do the same for Clinton's promises and report. Don't take his word for sure. Read. Find out for yourself. If you think Gary Rust quoted the scripture wrong on adultery, look it up in the Bible. Read about Abraham Lincoln's struggle for an education. Read about Jean Bell Mosley's efforts to acquire her education. Do you know others who have put forth these efforts? I know several, and they have lived happy and successful lives.

Theater returns lost billfold, posters

BECAUSE THE Spice Girls are our son's favorite group, we went to see "Spice World" at Cape West Cinema last weekend for his birthday. We wish to thank the usher who called us and returned my son's lost billfold and Spice posters when he left them at the theater.
