HOORAY FOR Mark Carver. I too was angry after Oct. 6's article regarding the Jackson band festival. It has been hard to cool off. Not only have these fine young people memorized some very difficult music, they marched with precision, moved their instruments in unison for effect, swing-danced and tipped their hats with great joy and enthusiasm. Isn't it about time we promote the discipline and intelligence our public school system brings out in our youth when challenged instead of small minorities who choose to fail? Come to the TWA dome on Oct. 30. I bet if it was the football team you'd be promoting and reporting it for weeks.
AFTER MY recent illness, it's nice of my neighbor to load my trash and leaf and bush clippings for me to take them to the landfill. Then when I get to the landfill a person I'd never met before turned out to be the principal of the Oran schools jumped in and insisted on unloading it for me. I want to thank these two gentlemen for their kindness.
I'D LIKE to make a rare non-political comment. I was at the Vince Gill concert. The review that was written described it exactly. It was fun. And yes, the females liked him more than the males.
THREE CHEERS for Senators Bond and Ashcroft. It takes a great deal of political courage to do the right thing when you know the race card is sure to be played. Let us judge the judge by his record and not by political correctness. Again, hooray for the senators.
WE HAVE a situation where we have boys willing to be Scouts, but no parents are willing to come forth to be the leaders. Leading Scouts can consist of a lesson each week for the boys and maybe getting a one-time training. Also there might be an adults' roundtable meeting to go to once a month if you desire to get other ideas. Scouting is well worthwhile. You get to know the boys in your child's community and it's a pleasure to do this. I ask parents to come forward and volunteer for the Boy Scouts of America.
IT APPEARS that Ashcroft and Bond's true characters have been exposed. Ashcroft knew that Bond would need political cover to vote against the appointment of Judge White. Ashcroft solicited the police chiefs first for a negative reaction and was refused. He then solicited the sheriffs that we now know had an emotional reason for eschewing a negative response. Tragically, one of the sheriffs lost his wife in a case where Judge White had overthrown the penalty due to constitutional issues. Ashcroft's own appointees have voted to overturn the death penalty more times than Judge White has. Bond's other reason for opposing Judge White's nomination is so weak as to be laughable. Bond had no problem with White's record when he was courting the support of blacks during his last election. The record has not changed in the meantime. When it comes time to follow through on his promises, he finds dishonest and hypocritical reasons to do so. I hope the good people of this area keep the low character of Ashcroft and Bond in mind the next time that they go to the polling booth.
FOR YEARS and years Republicans have been demonizing Democrats as tax and spend. We've been told that all of Reagan's income distribution, giving money to the rich at the expense of the poor, none of this would cause a budget deficit if we just had Republicans in Congress who would then have the discipline to not spend so much of our hard-earned tax dollars. Well, folks, take a look at what's going on now. We have a Republican Congress, and it is busting its own self-imposed spending limits daily. It is now looking at your Social Security as a way to bail itself out of its spending frenzy. Should the term "tax and spend" now be applied to the Republicans?
I WOULD like to comment on the Central High School Marching Tigers. I am one of the flag parents, and I would like to say that they are a great, outstanding Marching Tiger band. They really put a lot of time into their practices and their performances at their competitions. They were an outstanding band at the Jackson band festival.
