Thanks to law enforcement officers

A patriot or scoundrel?

HAVE YOU ever heard the expression "patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel." Well, our president is going to war and acting more patriotic than ever. I wonder what that means.

University should get back to basics

FORMER SEMO President Dr. Scully is the person most responsible for my college education. Dr. Scully advocated keeping SEMO's tuition as low as possible so students without great financial means could get a college degree. My first semester, including books, cost $80. Although $80 during the mid-60s was not a small sum, I could still afford to pay this amount with the help of a part-time job. My how things have changed. Instead of looking for ways to keep tuitions affordable, the last couple of administrations and their rubber-stamp boards will go to any means to seek tuition increases. Whereas my degree was paid for upon graduation, today's students graduate owing thousands of dollars in student loans. Students should be the first priority at any university, but at SEMO it's multi-million dollar buildings, $70,000 fountains, million dollar softball fields, a new home for the president, and any other perk these administrators might dream up. In my opinion, Nitschke and company can't justify what they charge now, much less an increase.

True kindness is done behind the scenes

I RESPECT and understand your efforts in having a kindness week is to be kind to people. But the ones I really respect don't get themselves organized to get their picture and name in the paper and pats on the back for political promotion for their businesses and stuff like. The ones I really respect are those people I've known and find out about who has just been doing good all along, quietly, never wanting their name in the paper. They just do it and don't want a pat on the back, because they know it's the right thing to do. They get their reward because God makes them feel good about themselves.
