I'D LIKE to comment about the Jackson School Board's disappointment that the tax increase didn't pass. Don't they ever think about the seniors in this town who are financially stretched to the limit and cannot afford any more taxes? This proposed tax increase included money to increase teachers' salaries. Isn't that just wonderful. Did the people on a fixed income get a raise? No. Get real. This town is too expensive to live in for the elderly.
I HAVE a suggestion for the Jackson School District. If it would sell the land it bought out by Bent Creek and take that money and enlarge the junior high, then go for a bond issue on expansion and building another elementary school, I think that would be much better. The land the district bought out at Bent Creek was way too expensive. I think that money should be spent on enlarging the junior high.
I THINK the Southeast Missourian should stay out of the Jackson school problems. We don't need Tamara Buck telling us we have overcrowded schools. We know that. But we don't have any rapport with our school board. And it's time the school board realizes that they have to answer to the citizens.
IN RESPONSE to the callers who believe the Jackson School Board is lying to its citizens, I'd like to point out a few items. West Lane has been added onto. The board told us Orchard could be added onto as well. When the bond issue passed and they examined the enrollment numbers, they added on to the existing plans before it was ever built. This was the exact same situation as in South Elementary. Unfortunately, you were not informed voters, and you completely bought into the negative publicity put forth by so-called concerned citizens. The Jackson schools continue to be a wonderful place for our children. I just hope that we have room for all of them. I have always believed that our school board has done the best it can in a no-win situation. Jackson board members, you have many supporters. Unfortunately, we aren't as loud or as angry as the opposition. Maybe things will turn around when their children are being schooled in janitor closets.
I READ with interest in the April 7 letter from the young lady, Amber, concerning abortion. Don't forget the basic rule. No, Amber, there is no Santa Claus. But there is a God, whom those that take another life will have to answer to someday. Young people like you can make a difference and maybe stand for more than what we adults do. God help us all in this day and age when we continue murder and slaughter our unborn. God help you young people to make a difference.
THIS PERRYVILLE crowd is getting rough. First, a local man is shot. Now two well-known townfolk are stabbed. Our state and federal government officials are already calling for gun manufacturers to take responsibility for all crimes committed with guns and are threatening to sue them if they don't quit forcing criminals to shoot people. I'm sure our government will have to throw its weight toward knife manufacturers. I've thought for many years that something funny was going on. Have you looked at a knife catalog lately? They have all kinds of knives, and they will sell them to anyone, even through the mail. Some knives are real small, and some are huge. Even swords. Some of these knives have been found on criminals and were even used by them. We've got to do something. I've even cut myself while using one. We need to threaten knife manufacturers. If they don't make non-cutting knives, our government will sue them. At least do background checks on buyers. Even moms and chefs. You never know. What about safety blades? They'd only open when they're close to fruit and vegetables. Please, people, write to your congressperson. Tell them to blame the knife manufacturers for all the crimes committed with knives. Please.
THE GREAT economic times and the peaceful times in which we are living can be carried back into the 1980s to the doorstep of the man I think was the second-greatest president of our country, Ronald Reagan. He brought about a tax cut, brought down the rates tremendously in the early 1980s and started an economic boom that hasn't stopped since. In 1986 he designed and passed a major tax reform law.
I WAS amazed to read Speak Out that said columnist David Broder is "another hardline Republican." David Broder is not guilty of that charge. No political party can legitimately claim David Broder as a member. He is a tremendously talented columnist who renders great public service. The Missourian does a real service by bringing his columns to its readers.
