Street needs repair
ON HARMONY Street in front of Gary's Beauty Shop there is a buckled up place in the street that is worse than a speed bump. Why don't the city workers fix it?
Just a few idiots
ABOUT THE Turkish student who's had people say nasty things to him: It seems to me that man is more of an American than a lot of the people he's going to college with. I find it very hard to believe anyone in college would even be saying this stuff. But he's been in America long enough that he should understand every society has idiots. Most Americans don't take out their anger on innocents.
Strikes in the future
I JUST want Gov. Bob Holden to make sure he saw what was happening in Minnesota, since he has ushered in the way for this to occur here when the unions do not get their wild wage requests and go out on strike. This is a simple fact of union life. This is what we have to look forward to, thanks to Holden.
Innocent casualties
I AGREE there should be no innocent deaths, but this is war, and sometimes innocent civilians will die. We do have to deal with it.
Ban the burning
MY BROTHER lives in St. Louis. He told me that if you do any burning there, they fine you $500 the first time. Cape Girardeau ought to fine people in order to clean up the air. The air stinks from all this burning going on. It's disgusting. You can't even open your windows to get fresh air. I can't leave my kids out to play because the smoke is so bad.
A good convenience
I WANT to commend you on the portable toilets for the music festival. They were very nice and clean.
Let kids be kids
ABOUT BOB Miller's column on the athlete from Jackson: I'd just like to say let the kids be kids. Don't try to take anything for granted that they do. Enjoy what they do. We need to quit the jealousy.
Mindless jogging
JOGGING MIGHT improve heart, lung, and muscle function, but it apparently does damage to the brain. That's the only conclusion I can come to when I see joggers on the four-lane Mount Auburn Road. There is hardly room for two cars side by side, much less joggers. With the new walking trail and all of the quiet neighborhoods in Cape Girardeau, what in the world could be going through these people's minds to choose Mount Auburn as a place to jog. I find it ironic that these healthy lifestyle types who avoid tobacco, alcohol, red meat and whatever else they deem bad for their bodies will risk life and limb to jog on the busiest and tightest street in town.
Racial profiling
IF THERE would have been more racial profiling, maybe the terrorists would not have gotten by with what they did. Has the Rainbow Coalition gone to the aid of the white farmers in South Africa that are being slaughtered every day?
Great Jackson tennis
I WANT to congratulate the Jackson tennis team for winning the district title this year. The team has had a great year. I hope it can continue and bring home the state championship.
Magnets wash off
I TAKE care of a drive-through car wash. I would like to tell everyone who goes through one that these car washes will take off the magnetic plates that are on the car. We have picked up a bunch of them already. Take them off before you go through. Thank you.
We miss Clinton
COUNT ME among the many people who love President Clinton. As do so many, I miss him more and more every day.
President with morals
DO I still wish Bill Clinton was president? That's a good question. The answer, of course, is a resounding no. I'm glad he's no longer president and that we now have a president with morals for the first time in eight years.
