A Bush fan
I AM a Bush fan, and it has nothing to do with being ignorant about his policies or because I have received a tax cut. I support him because I feel he is right. He inherited this unfinished business in Iraq and received a blow when terrorists attacked our great nation. I would hate to think that I had to carry those burdens on my shoulders. I think President Bush has done the very best he possibly could considering all the problems and decisions he has had to deal with. Instead of criticizing him, maybe we should be praying for him and his family. I hope Bush will be our leader for four more years.
Political propaganda
THAT DAVID Limbaugh uses bits and pieces of Roman Catholic theology to buttress his arguments is understandable. This is a long-accepted and quite necessary technique for political propagandists.
Time for judgment
AS THE courts are removing the Ten Commandments from our public institutions and as practicing homosexual bishops are admitted to serve a certain church, another church is being sued for priests sexually abusing children, and the values of our world disintegrate. Wouldn't it be a great time for Judgment Day?
Funny people
I WAS a resident of California for over 17 years, and I remember California people getting itchy feet and being malcontent. One minute they hate the Democratic governor. The next minute they hate the Republican governor. The only governor they loved was Earl Warren. It's a funny state. I know the attitudes of the people. They're not Republican. They're not Democrat. They're just funny people.
Obey traffic laws
I GET so tired of reading that the cause of accidents is talking on the cell phone. I believe talking on cell phones contributes to accidents, no doubt about it. But the biggest cause of accidents is that traffic laws aren't enforced and people ignore them with impunity. If people drove according to traffic laws, there wouldn't be as many accidents.
Animal in distress
AT ABOUT 6 p.m., Friday I stopped at Bloomfield Road. A large, brown dog was running out in the road and was very nervous about the traffic. A car came by, and the driver stopped and let a young man jump out on the shoulder and coax the dog off the road. He motioned his driver friend to go off the road and stop. After he caught the dog by the collar, he appeared to be calling someone on his cell phone. We salute these two young people who risked their safety to help a lost animal who was in distress.
Watch those butts
HERE IS a good nickname for Cape Girardeau: The City of Butts. Look at our intersections on Kingshighway. The cigarette butts keep piling up. I thought we had a littering ordinance. Not only is it ugly, but it's dangerous too. I'm afraid someone is going to throw out a hot butt and catch another auto on fire. Please contain your butts.
Automatic pilot
DURING THE big power blackout, the governors of each state did a great job keeping things together. Our president was on his way to California for a fund-raising political dinner. Our vice president was on vacation in the West. They left the White House on automatic pilot, and our boys and girls are still getting killed in Iraq. Should we have a recall too?
Downtown blocked off
IT'S THAT time of year again. Everyone talks about Jackson being a growing and progressive town. Yet every year the city blocks the downtown area for Homecomers. Why not have this at the park or somewhere besides the hub of town. Traffic is bad enough. Why do this to one of the busiest sections of town? A lot of people have moved here from other areas. Some may not care for outdated traditions.
Tomahawk song
MY HUSBAND and I have season tickets at SEMO, and we attend other sports as well. At quite a few games a year in both basketball and football the band plays the tomahawk song up, and some band members do the tomahawk symbol. Students are adamant. They don't want the Indian nickname changed. This is political correctness baloney.
