IN a stunning piece by Jonathan Sacks of The Wall Street Journal, he posits the thesis that it is religion, not political or economic freedom, or society acting through the various levels of government that allow societies to progress. Tell that to the serfs and peasants of the 1,000-year middle ages, where religion was used as a tool to convince these hapless humans that though their lives were rough on Earth they would receive their reward in heaven.
CONGRESS is complaining that they are underpaid and overworked. Guess that is why they could only get out the two letter word "no" for the past two years. I have one thing to say about them. We can sure do a lot better than who we have in there now, including the new ones that just got voted in.
THE same folks who are up in arms about these post offices that are under consideration for closing would fuss if the price of stamps went up to 55 or 60 cents. The post office is set up to run as a self-supporting business, receiving no tax revenue, and any business that continually loses money cannot survive. Raising rates commensurate with the cost of actually keeping these offices operating would result in stamp prices these folks could not afford.
ASK the older Procter & Gamble people about when Dick Cheney was a board member. Be ready to get an ear full, as he cost them a lot of money since he is such a smart businessman. Another one that people let get by that should have never been elected.
WHAT an absurd comparison. Someone said President Obama reminded him of Nero. President Obama is a very sharp dresser and a heck of a basketball player. Nero played the fiddle and wore a toga.
A Speak Out caller seemed to think there is a difference between sports and academics and that Cape Girardeau Central High School should have spent money on the latter rather than building a football stadium. The caller simply doesn't realize that education and sports are synonymous. Central is just as well served by building a football stadium for educational purposes as it would have been if it had spent money for physics classes on a giant particle accelerator.
SINCE there is no method for recalling U.S. Senators and the president (short of impeachment and removal from office for high crimes and misdemeanors; not the same as a recall effort on the state level), one can safely assume that the Speak Out caller who recently called for the recall of U.S. senators and the president flunked high school civics.
