I DON'T understand why so many cyclists insist on riding their bikes along Route W between Cape Girardeau and Fruitland. It is a narrow, hilly, twisty road with no shoulders or passing zones. That is the worst possible route anyone could possibly choose to ride on. Maybe when there is a fatal accident someone will realize this is an unsafe route for cyclists.
ATTORNEY GENERAL Gonzales stepped down after relentless Democratic attacks for not agreeing with the Democratic party line. He is a good man who was demeaned by this onslaught to get to President Bush. Many of us won't forget the Democrats' hate next election.
I READ Southeast Missourian Jr. every month. There are so many talented children in this area, and I enjoy reading this special publication because it has all kinds of news in it. I thank you for having this for the children. They didn't have that in my day. I want to congratulate the parents of these children. They must be doing a great job.
THE CURRENT catastrophe that's taking place in our lending institutions is no different than the spending habits of this administration. Their devil-may-care attitude toward debt and fiscal responsibility will burden our children with $9 trillion of debt. Every time someone mentions Bill Clinton, Republicans rant and rave about his infidelities. Judging by what I've been reading, I can only say that at least he was with someone of the opposite sex. I bet it makes the GOP feel all tingly to see so many of their righteous colleagues coming out of the closet.
I WAS born and raised in Cape Girardeau, grew up and moved away. In doing so, my job made it hard for me to get back as much as I would have liked. In the past six years, I have not made it back at all. So when I went down Broadway the other day to see all the changes downtown, I was shocked and saddened at the condition of Broadway. What was once a thriving business district is now nearly a slum. I cannot believe that the main street that takes visitors downtown has been allowed to get in such a mess. You may have seen it so many times that you have grown accustomed to the look of it, but, believe me, others will not see it as anything but a disgrace. You have the wonderful new bridge and the beautiful floodwall murals. But to get there you show your ugly side. Your wonderful city of roses has a large thorn.
IN THE Best of Cape County section under restaurants, what happened to barbecue? I don't see any category for best barbecue.
OF COURSE everyone agrees with having a clean environment. We also have had thousands of years of ice ages, tropical heat, volcanoes and asteroids. Our sun has changed our climate more than man ever did.
TO THOSE of you who think the reason food prices are going up is because corn prices are high, just think: Farmers are not getting anymore for their corn this year than they got last year. So how do you explain that? It costs the farmer more for fuel, fertilizer and feed this year. The corn prices were higher earlier this year but now that harvest time is here and the farmer has to sell his crop, the prices are as low as they were last year. Who is making the profit? Not the farmers. And if it doesn't rain, there will be no soybeans to sell. How would you like to be a farmer?
THIS IS the two-year anniversary of Hurricane Katrina. After two years, people should at least be in a house instead of a trailer. I've been to New Orleans for Mardi Gras. Bourbon Street, the French Quarter and things tourists like have improved. But some businesses still have broken windows. If we can rebuild Iraq, we should be able to rebuild New Orleans.
Hark. What is this I read? A chemical that was used during a previous war was found in Iraq in 1994 and sent to a U.N. building in the United States? Nah. It can't be true. Ask all the naysayers. They'll tell you Iraq has no chemical weapons. Not Iraq. No. It's all a lie. This was probably a plant from the government placed there when they were putting up all the explosives to bring down the World Trade Center. Yes. That's it. The U.S. government planted it to try to make Iraq look bad. Shame on the U.S. Shame.
It's amazing. We have seen the self-proclaimed Christian, conservative, Republican moral majority go down the toilet to become the immoral minority. And the Democrats didn't have to cast a stone.
I am so tired of hearing people complain about the school supplies they have to buy for their children. I don't think they realize how much money the teachers have to put into their classroom because the school district doesn't provide enough. Teachers are expected to provide so much in the classroom. And a majority of the time, they are buying supplies for their students because the parents decided not to buy something. Show a little respect for your teachers. During the school year, they have your children more during waking hours than you do.
Can people please move on with their lives and forget about Mike Vick and his so-called heinous acts? Remember, these are dogs that were fighting, abused and killed. They weren't people.
I WISH Chaffee would do something about the man on Helen Street who filters through everyone's trash on every trash day.
