LET me get this straight. Opponents of the new health care legislation want to be held hostage to the insurance companies to tell us not only who can have insurance but how much we must pay. My insurance premium continues to increase every year. Opponents to the health care bill apparently want to be held hostage by the drug companies who tell us how much we must pay for prescriptions. Is there no end to the increasing cost of drugs? Opponents want to be held hostage by the doctors and hospitals who make us pay ever-increasing fees for health care. Is this what the opponents are saying? Someone needs to step between us and those who have taken us hostage, and that is what the new health care legislation does.
THOUGH I oppose most tea party types with every fiber of my being, at least their members have led us all to realize that the essential nature of man is irrational.
A big thank you goes to the person responsible for maintaining the landscape in front of Central Junior High School in Cape Girardeau. It is lovely and brightens my day. Thanks for all of your hard work.
HATS off to the fair committee for having an ample supply of transportation around the fairgrounds during senior day. It was much better than last year, and we appreciated it. Thanks again.
SAM Blackwell's best-ever column appeared in the Southeast Missourian Sept. 9. I encourage everyone, if you did not read it then, to find that newspaper and read that column. It will help to clarify your thinking about the proposed casino in Cape Girardeau.
AS far as I'm aware, people who make $200,000 and more already pay their fair share of taxes. I don't understand the mentality that if you want to make money, you should be punished and have to pay a higher tax rate. What's the incentive to make more money?
I want to share how disappointed the residents of the surrounding neighborhood are with the inaction in regard to blatant noise violations coming from the Southeast Missouri State University campus on the night of Sept. 18. Either a school-sponsored party or dorm party was allowed to continue with an excessive amount of loud music past 1 a.m., blatantly disrupting the surrounding neighborhood. I have filed a formal complaint with the Cape Girardeau Police Department and would like to hear back on the school's standards for noise tolerance.
I have a question that no one is willing to answer: Why is it disrespectful of me to claim that there is no god, but a Christian can shove his God down my throat and it's not disrespectful?
CONGRATS to the Cape Central Marching Tigers. They performed Saturday in two band competitions at Farmington and Murphysboro and took first place in their division for both competitions. Way to go, Tigers. This shows how the band's hard work pays off. Keep up the good work, and good luck with the rest of the season.
IS there something in the water around here? Central's football team is undefeated. So is Southeast's. Jackson and Central scored perfect or near-perfect on Missouri's educational assessment standards. We've turned everything around so quickly. It's a miracle. And, to top it off, we may (keep your fingers crossed) get a casino. Seemingly overnight, this area has become a virtual utopia. I give all the credit to President Bush.
