I AM not in favor of drug testing solely because students drive to school. The Fourth Amendment to the Constitution guarantees that we are protected against unreasonable searches and seizures. A drug test because someone drives is an unreasonable search because driving is obviously not indicative of drug use. I hope the right people in Graves County, Ky., stand up and fight this one.
AS A taxpayer, I would like to know how much the settlement between Rodney Arnold and Jay Knudtson cost the taxpayers.
IF ALL the other area school districts received the tax base that Nell Holcomb School District receives from Procter & Gamble, the boards in these districts could spend the money and give themselves a pat on the back and a feather in the hat as well.
OBVIOUSLY THESE people who think restaurant workers should stay as long as customers want to come in wouldn't mind themselves regularly working well past their eight-hour shifts. Does it occur to them that these cooks and servers have had a long, hard day and want to leave after their eight hours? There's a reason businesses post business hours. If you can't get to a restaurant, eat and leave within these hours, eat at home.
I'M STARTING to be ashamed to say I'm from Jackson anymore. We have children shooting and stabbing each other. Who can be proud of that? Not I or anyone else I know. Parents, control your children and teach them better. My children are not allowed to run the streets and stir up trouble. Call me strict, but my children are safe.
"SICKO" WAS one of the best comedies I've ever seen. You need to travel out of the U.S. more and see how things are in countries with socialized medicine. Michael Moore is one of those people who thinks America is all wrong, no matter what we try to do, and he makes every attempt to convince the weak-minded he is right. He supports almost every socialist idea that has already been tried and failed elsewhere. As for "An Inconvenient Truth," here's an inconvenient truth for you: The energy output of our sun has been increasing for several decades. Real scientists know this. This has led to some warming of all the planets. Mars' ice caps have been shrinking as well. We cannot stop this. It has happened before and will happen again.
THANKS SO much to Millie and her gang at Main Street Fitness in Jackson for having the Camp Supernova children for two days. My daughter had a wonderful time. Thanks to the dynamic group of helpers, both young and old, and to Miss Pat. We'll never forget what you've done. God bless you all.
WHEN AMERICANS considered education to be a family matter in cooperation with the church, schooling was not heavily subsidized or controlled by the government. Yet our literacy rates and academic standards were the envy of the world. In recent decades, churches and families have yielded the responsibility of education to government, and we have seen disastrous results: uneducated students with the inability to read and rampant immorality. We are no longer the envy of the world.
JACKSON HOMECOMERS is always fun, but where was the saltwater taffy? This is the second year it hasn't been there. My family misses it. Please bring it back.
IF THEY'RE going to ban smoking in Illinois, then they should ban bars, because drunken drivers kill a lot more people than second-hand smoke.
I WAS reading about the extension of Fountain Street and its planned roundabout. I also read a suggestion that there should be a fountain for the war memorial. I'm of the opinion that Fountain Street should have a fountain. Perhaps they could combine the two in the roundabout. A fountain representing a war memorial in the roundabout on Fountain Street, What type of interest that would bring?
I HAVE listened to the far left and the media criticize President Bush constantly. After reading the column by Gene Lyons, I feel compelled to reply. Islamic jihadists have been attacking Christians and Jews worldwide for 30 plus years. Read Col. David Hunt's book, "They Just Don't Get It," for details. Republicans and Democrats alike did nothing, while President Bush has taken action. Lyons called him an emotional cripple. No president has given more for our great economy, and the Islamic terrorists haven't attacked us since 9-11.
I LIVE in Jackson. I want to thank the person who came back to get my last solar light. He took one about three weeks ago and decided he wanted the other one. I appreciate that because we older people don't have anything left to admire in our yard. It is getting disgusting that you can't put anything out for beautification.
I GOT my list for Jackson School District school supplies for my children. Why do we have to buy teachers their school supplies when we pay such high school taxes in Jackson? Do we not pay enough in taxes that the teachers and the school district can't buy their own supplies? Why should parents have to supply them?
ON JULY 1 we had a wreck on Route A between Marquand and Patton. We turned over our RV and our truck. We ended up in a ditch. There was a couple who helped us, I lost their names. And about three other couples also. They called for help and took my dog and kept him until we got out of the hospital. I want to thank them also for being so nice. And the paramedics and the firefighters too. God was with us, and it is nice to know that there are people who would be so thoughtful.
MY DAUGHTER and I were driving by Meadow Heights School in Bollinger County the other night and saw that a building was on fire. We stopped. People had already called the fire department. It was amazing to see the volunteer firemen from around the area respond to this fire. These are people who have worked long days, either out in the field or in a factory and probably were getting ready to go to bed. They put their lives at risk to serve their community. Some of these people came from other communities as well. That spirit of volunteerism out in the country is fantastic. You should have seen the wonderful job they did. It was just amazing and we thank all of them for their effort and their hard work. We appreciate it. Thank you.
