I DON'T give a hoot about global warming. My family and friends live the good life. We work hard and have nice homes and cars. Our children love school. I like my job and love my wife. I don't know what they mean by voting to take back America. Everyone I know already has it all.
FROM WHAT I have read and heard about ethanol plants, the only people who will make money will be the investors. We common people will pay for the plants in health damage and higher prices for items such as milk.
WHEN NO Child Left Behind first came into being, a lot of local folks liked it because it gave them a chance to feel superior to St. Louis and Kansas City. It's not so easy being smug now, is it?
HERE'S THE obvious solution to the poor performance at Cape Girardeau schools: First, get rid of the federal achievement standards. Second, create local standards that we know our students can pass. Third, walk around smugly because we know better. Fourth, see our children struggle in college and in the business world.
I THINK Michael Vick, the football player, should get a lot more than five years for murdering innocent animals. Anyone who would be involved in something like this is sick. How could anyone get enjoyment from hurting animals?
YOU CAN tell it is back-to-school time with all the yellow buses and children with backpacks and the toilet paper in the trees. I know children think the toilet paper is funny, but it is a big mess. Some people try to clean it up, and others wait for the wind and rain to take care of it. It is a pain for everybody who live around it.
I have heard all the Michael Vick stuff I care to hear. He is a guy who wants to have a thug image until it is time to stand in front of a judge. That is when he decides to clean up his image and ditch the thug style. You're right about not judging a book by it's cover. No matter the exterior, he's still a thug on the inside.
THIS SATURDAY, a young woman was skateboarding and lost her skateboard in the middle of the curve on the 1500 block of Big Bend Road. Cars are driven way above the speed limit of 35 mph. I want to know what this young woman was thinking. Need I say more?
THE EDUCATOR of the year should always be a teacher, because principals have reward enough with the big salaries they earn. I've read articles that say being praised is almost as good as getting more in your paycheck. Receiving recognition is what a lot of people need in this life.
AMAZING, AMAZING. I went to see Mike Dumey's production of "Sing, America, Sing." The young talent was simply amazing with country, gospel and Broadway tunes. It was better than Branson. It makes me want to go back. It has wonderful talent.
IT'S THE third day of school for Cape Girardeau, and it has already started. Students are bringing home offers from restaurants to donate 10 percent of what you spend to your school. I think it is a flagrant misuse of our schoolchildren to send these fliers and menus home with our children. If these restaurants want to contribute to the school, let them do so. Write out a check. Don't use the children anymore.
REGARDING THE rapture: I find solace in God's word in Matthew 25:31-34, "When the son of man shall come in his glory and all the holy angels with him, then shall he sit upon the throne of his glory and before him shall he gather all nations and he shall separate them one from another as a shepherd divided his sheep from the goats and he shall set the sheep on the right hand but the goats on the left. Then shall the king say unto them on his right hand, come, ye, blessed are my father inherit the kingdom, prepared for you from the foundation of the world." That is rapture to me, even though you won't find the word "rapture" in the Bible. If you look it up in the dictionary, it says the state of being rapt, carried away with lofty emotion and raptured, transported, engrossed, intent, deeply engaged, transported, ecstatic, joy, ecstasy. To me that is the rapture, and that is how I interpret it in the inspired Word of God, the Holy Bible.
SO MANY people feel that construction-area speed limits can be ignored. There is a reason for the lower speed limit. The lanes are not even, the shoulders are not prepared, there are cones everywhere and just because it's late at night does not mean that it is any safer. The speed limit is posted for a reason. It is not up to the common citizen to decide if that speed limit is correct. It is up to the common citizen to obey the law. Those workers are putting their lives in danger to make the roads better for us.
I WANT to recognize the excellent photography Kit Doyle is doing for the Southeast Missourian sports section. I think some of these local umpires and referees might also want to take notice. The pictures I've seen have told the story of at least one bad call in recent months.
I AM requesting that the Jackson transportation director re-evaluate the way the bus routes are run in the Jackson School District. Buses stop at three out of seven houses in a row. These students can walk more than the length of a house. These are children who run and play all summer long. Surely they can walk more than the width of one yard. Stopping at three out of seven houses ties up traffic and creates dangerous situations.
I WONDER how many doctors in Cape Girardeau would take the time to pray for their patients. I went to one today and told her how I hurt, and she prayed for me. What a wonderful, thoughtful doctor she is. I'm so thankful that I went to her today.
