No surprise

IT'S no surprise that in a state-of-the-states Gallup Poll on healthy behavior, Missouri ranked in the lower range of states.

Easy A

THIRD day into junior high school and my daughter is already watching a movie in choir. Another year of movies and socializing. No wonder students joke about the easy A in this class.

Old but good

CARTOON nostalgia: I attended high school and college in Cape Girardeau and had been away for 40-plus years. I remembered reading Alley Oop when I was growing up and assumed that this comic strip was long gone. What a pleasant surprise to see it show up as a trial comic in the funnies. Now if you could work on getting Red Ryder and Joe Palooka back, it would be just like the good old days.

Professional work

I thought I was a professional until I read a quote from a person I respect that said, "A professional is one who does his best work when he doesn't feel like it." When I am sick or in a bad mood, my professionalism takes a distant back seat.

Basic civics

THE person complaining about the loss of limited government is lost when it comes to a fundamental understanding of our Constitution. I cannot list all of the errors in thinking of the person who believes our federal government has absolute power. I would say this person should take a course in civics.

All in a name

PRESIDENT Obama says there will be no death panels. Is he saying that the government won't start denying people care based on cost versus expected productive value to society? Or is he saying he won't call his menagerie of bean-counting bureaucrats a death panel? I suspect the latter. I expect the final Obamacare bill will empower the left-wing socialist's gift of semantics to rename the "end-of-life decision-making assistance board" that Sarah Palin so succinctly, correctly and plainly translated as "death panel board" with a camouflage name to disguise that necessary cost-reduction component the Obama-Pelosi-Reid trio say is absolutely essential to effective health-care reform. I wonder what kind of moniker they'll come up with. Here are some obvious ones: Caskets for Clunkers, Reaper's Review Board, Cessation Commission, Termination Task Force, Curtains Committee.

They're there

REGARDING people who are late for a church service: Isn't it more important for them to be there than not be there at all? Don't let someone else's issues affect your day.

A bright moment

I, too, have a family member in a nursing home and am there daily. It saddens and amazes me that some of these people, some of whom were leaders in our community, never have anyone to come visit them. Just a short visit can brighten their day and make them feel loved. Just a hug or a touch of your hand lifts their spirits. They may not remember that you were there after you leave, but for that moment, you have brought life back to them, and you will remember that you were there.

Public system

IT'S easy to go to a meeting and shout down the speaker. All you need is a few cronies. Pay a few more and ship them in so you appear to be a well-organized campaign. Some are even fooled into thinking you are a grassroots campaign. If all the nations, developing and developed, that have better health care than do we actually have achieved that through a public health-care system, why should we reject it? It seems many folks in Southeast Missouri accept the approach to addressing those in society unable to afford health care: "Let them die!" This is odd since it comes from many of Americans who actually would be much better off with a public option. Please think before knee-jerk reacting.

Common folks

TOWN hall meetings were instrumental in stopping the Obama socialist takeover juggernaut. Thank God, and thank you, fellow patriots. You have proved once again that it is us common folks who have the power when we choose to use it, get involved and stand up for our constitutional rights. This is just the beginning. Don't let up.

Great entertainment

WE went to see Mike Dumey's production of "Godspell," and I want to let everybody know it was a worthwhile experience. It's definitely worth the money. The food was great, the entertainment was great, it was extremely funny and the students just did a great job. Dumey does so much with these students. He does a lot for our community.

Traffic lights

THE traffic lights going through Jackson need to re-evaluated. They are a mess. Somebody needs to rethink this plan.
