Take back America

THE NATHAN Cooper situation is another reason the people need to take back their government in the 2008 elections. Government answers to the people. When choosing a candidate for a public office, people need to do a complete background on that candidate and find out what that candidate is all about and what he or she represents. Our government has became so corrupted we need to make a serious course change, and the 2008 election will allow us all to do that. Pay attention who these candidates are in both the Democratic and Republican parties before making a choice on who will represent and lead us. If our founding fathers could see this mess we are in, they would not believe it. We can do better, and we have the power to make it better and bring America back to what she was: the greatest country in the world.

Fresh air

HERE'S A breath of fresh air. A politician who admits he's guilty, offers to cooperate in the investigation and resigns his position in government.

Take the heat

THE ONLY way this fiasco at the new federal courthouse will ever be stopped is to go up the line of government building supervisors (or at least those who were supposed to be supervising) and fire them without pension and no unemployment pay. This is the only way to purge the government ranks of the lazy, nonworking, nonproducing debris they call government workers. It's time to make the leeches responsible for their laziness.

More propaganda

DAVID LIMBAUGH continues to demonize Democrats but bemoans the apparent fact that people don't seem to be buying into or paying attention to his bashing. It's called overkill, Mr. Limbaugh, and the people have rightfully tired of reading propagandistic political tracts.

Cost-efficient

IT SEEMS that Southeast Missourians love to blame NASA for all of government's spending problems. The total budget for NASA is $16.8 billion. The budget for the Department of Defense is $419.3 billion. NASA represents less than 1 percent of the total federal budget. In addition to space exploration, NASA has intensive education programs to foster interest in science and mathematics in addition to providing funding for the nation's brightest scientists to grow and begin their research careers. The remote-sensing technology used by NASA to analyze the Martian surface is also used in national defense and intelligence. In short, NASA has plenty of benefits and doesn't cost that much.

Out of whack

AS PRESIDENT Kennedy said in January 1961, "Ask not what your country can do for you, but ask what you can do for your country." Every American should remember and follow these words. Our society is out of whack and needs a serious course correction. It is not just some of our politicians who have become greedy and corrupt. Greed has taken over many good lives in our country and has caused many hardships for so many American families. We must learn in this great nation that the almighty dollar is not everything in life.

Money for loans

I HOPE and pray that the lawsuit to block the use of MOHELA money for campus construction projects is won and the money is left for loans like it is supposed to be. We are so far behind other countries that produce more engineers.

Money pit

WHAT WOULD our country be without Cape Girardeau's unfinished federal courthouse? Solvent?

Higher raise

TWO SLAPS in the face for Cape Girardeau School District teachers: First was the educators of the year being principals, not classroom instructors. Second and probable more offensive was the school board approving the administrator's raise that was 1 percent higher than the teachers. Shame on the board members.

Pay for return

NATHAN COOPER should be required to pay the cost of finding out where these people he brought into this country illegally are. They are illegal aliens. They are breaking the law. He needs to pay to send them back where they came from.

Equal treatment

SINCE WHEN did Cape Gir-ardeau County Prosecuting Attorney Morley Swingle begin to worry about the taxpayers' money? If this was some little innocent guy on the street, he'd throw the book at them. Why not Nathan Cooper? If Cooper deserves punishment by the state, let's punish him just like you would any other human being.

Real work

I THINK Jackson has put an unnecessary four-way stop on Greensferry Road. If the street department is looking for work, it could mow or kill the grass that grows on North Hope Street or maybe clean up the leaves from last fall that some homeowners have ignored. Or how about taking the large stones that border some properties on that street? I can find plenty of things for the street department to do besides put up four-way stops.

Constant bashing

DAVID LIMBAUGH is a narrow-minded person. He can't write a column without bashing Democrats for one reason or the other. He hates Bill Clinton. Has he taken a good look at what the Republicans have done to us in the last eight years? Clinton didn't get anybody killed in a useless war.

Street runners

THE ONLY right-of-way walkers and runners have in the street is if they are in a pedestrian crosswalk. If they are running in the street into oncoming traffic on a two-way street, don't they realize there's traffic coming from both ways?
