THOUGH unintended, the polemic of Dennis Matheis, Missouri president of Anthem Blue Cross and Blue Shield, against a public option for health care was the best argument I've seen for one. In fact, all of the advantages government insurance would have over private insurance made me think perhaps a single-payer system would be the best.
IN philosophical terms, there is a chasm of difference between fascism and communism. They are polar opposites. That's why I wish all the right-wingers could at least make up their collective minds about whether or not President Obama is, in their opinion, a communist or a fascist.
"CASH for clunkers" is a joke and another way for the auto dealers to pretend they're giving buyers a break when they are only profiting even more. I visited three dealers and got their rock-bottom price on a car at each dealership. My credit is excellent, and I had 20 percent in cash. The next day, I took my clunker in. Surprise. The rock bottom price went up the exact same amount as the "clunkers" rebate. So with the "clunkers" rebate, the dealer gets more money from the buyer and an incentive from the government.
EVERYONE is always extolling the virtues of the U.S. health-care system, calling it the greatest in the world. However, we rank 29th out of 30 industrialized countries when it comes to infant mortality. When it comes to average life expectancy, the U.S. is 24th. What's so great about that? If you have one, ask your family doctor if we have the best health-care system in the world. Ten to one he or she will say no.
SOMEONE asked why the Department of Energy was established. Good question. It was established to pave the way for the coming cap and trade.
